Hi everyone, Can anyone tell me if you can fit roof rails to a Series I Discovery that did not have them from new?? Is it a straightforward job with the rails bolting to mount points under the headlining? Cheers Bruce Hinson Thames, NEW ZEALAND |

I think all the US Disco's came with them installed but I want to take mine off because they aren't being used under my adventure rack. Without the rails the adventure rack could be made to sit about 4" lower too. I'm trying to find someone that has enough welding experience to attempt the job. Maybe Northwestparts will try to make a lower profile one from scratch. Sorry this wasn't much help but I sure they are just mounted to some kind of brace above the headliner. Maybe if you can find a picture of the rails off a vehicle you can tell how they are mounted. I don't know how thick the steel roof is but maybe you can use some kind of anchor screws but I am sure the weight needs to be distributed on some kind of brace. |

Hi Bruce The roof has the brace already there, you will need to remove all the headlining first, this should expose the centre holes of the cross rails, you will then need to drill a small hole up through the roof, then with a hole cutter ( I think 50mm, but check diameter first ) drill back down from top, and through only the first skin. then enlarge small hole to accept the threaded section, you will need some sponge washers to fill out the gaps. You will know how succesful you were when you come to fit the crossbars, as they will only fit properly if you drill up perfectly square. Jason do what LR do and just fit a large rubber grommet in the hole, great place to run power cables for roof rack lights. All the best Pete S. |
