My 99 disco I is leaking steering fluid. It appears to be coming out of the lower seal on the steering box where the steering arm is attached. Is this seal easy to replace or is a new box or rebuild in order? It otherwise works fine if I keep the fluid filled. I only have 56k miles, barely out of warranty!

Thanks,
Dwight

I would change the box. The problem is that the shaft gets a little loose in the bearing, and the seal can't move enough to stay oil tight. So a new seal will only be a short-term fix.

That's why Rover priced steering boxes so low

99? That's pretty young for a bad lower seal. Mine made 110,000 and then I got a used box with 65,000 that seals well.

Get the box from Meridian in San Diego. Prices are about 300 (vs 800 from Rover, 400 to 500 rebuilt) and they supposedly made some improvements to help some of these issues.

BTW, be sure you check hoses under the reservoir first as leaks start here and travel down the hoses(s) to the box. Also Lucas power steering oil (ATF) additive can help slow leaks.

1) Clamps 2) Lucas 3) Live with it 4) Replace box.

I had a factory steering box start bleeding profusely on my '95 D1 (just 9 days out of warranty, mind you) and never could get it to stop. A couple of years ago I bought a rebuilt Meridian box and haven't lost a drop since. However, you may end up replacing the PS pump after you put in a new box -- something about the old pump getting worn out with swarf and then not being able to handle the pressure of a non-leaking box. I think Meridian still rebuilds the pumps as well (mine hasn't dripped any fluid in 2 years).

Make sure you check the hoses and clamps first!!!They are known to give out about this time. I fixed a serious leak (fluid once a week) on my 96 D1 at about 80K with just $3 in clamps and now it doesn't leak a drop.

And all this time I thought this was how LR prevented the chassis from rusting!

Try some Lucas Power Steering Seal. I got it at Auto Zone it's very thick fluid and does a great job of sealing the poorly designed box.

Yeah- i tried the lucas stuff in my steering box.. didnt stop the steering box leaks, but enuff of it eventually leaked thru and ran back to my oil pan and congealed enuff to slow some leakage there.
