97 Disco: What would be the reason why my ZF will not shift out of 1st gear? I have reverse and 1st only. Fluid was recently changed, it's filled to the correct level. I changed my filter at 35K, now has 70K miles. Help? |

This is a common failure, try manually shifting into 2nd and see if it goes. Post back with the answer |

I tried all selections, no luck while it was happening. Now it is working fine. I thought maybe I had jarred some wiring while I was removing the cooler lines. My lines were leaking so I had them reworked with new hose and fittings. So far, several trips afterwards, no issues. I have noticed that it now shifts into the final drive at 55 mph instead of 50 as before. Any ideas why? Dirt? Electircal connections? Just really curious now. Bruce |

Im not sure on a Rover, but on a Hummer the transmission has a "Limp" mode. This only allowes low gear and reverse. |

Mine has done this a couple of times, always after a hard fogging off-road. It just fixed itself. Mine also changed the shift point for 4th gear I think. Really weird. No explanations, just wanted to let you know your not alone. Dan |

I think I must have introduced some damn dirt when reinstalling my reworked cooler lines. My LR mechanic says the govenor could be partcially clogged. I will follow his advice and replace the filter, although it's about time since I replaced the filter at 35K, it now has 70K. On my way to the airport this AM, it did it again, waited a few minutes with engine running and the issue stopped. It almost seems like once it warms up, the problem disappears... obviously not my area of knowledge. Thanks for making me feel like I am not alone. Bruce |

Whats happening is that the Valve Body, which controls shifting has a sticking valve/s. If you run the truck for a few days the problem will clear itself. However each time you drain and refill the transmission the stuck in gear or in neutral cycle will start again. I've got used to this behavior since about the 60k mark...now with 127 k. I think you Rover is growing up and developing "Character". Congrats!
