Does anyone know the cheapest place to buy a trailer wiring harness for a 2002 Disco II?

Is the write up in the tech section for a D1 gonna be the same for a D2? I'm interested in trying this out over the weekend.

Thanks,

Greg

Anyone know if the tech section writeup also applies to the D2?

Thanks,
Greg

Didn't catch the DII part the first go around....

Not sure Greg but I don't know how different it could be.. Even if the wires colors are different I would think you would just need an 'assistant' (ie, wife or girlfriend) and a voltmeter to find the right ones. I say 'just do it' and make a tech write up when you are done.

Here are the instructions & kit I used a year or so ago (and many trailer trips ago) on my 2001 D2. It took less than an hour (with beer) and has worked perfectly...

--------------

If you want to do it via Walmart, cheaper than NAPA, here's what I just did over the weekend:

Items necessary:
(1) Universal trailer wiring kit, the kind labeled "Converts Vehicles with
independent bulb turn signals to common bulb trailer turn signals" I used
a Wal-Mart kit #46155, $19.93
(1) metric sized bolt, I used an M6 x 16
(1) Pliers

Optional:
(1) de-bug plug - for making sure it all works. $2.44 @Wal-Mart

Remove the factory trailer plug from its storage space behind the passenger
side tail lights.

Using the crimp connectors (supplied with wiring kit) and the pliers, crimp
the following 4 wires:

1.Land Rover Green with White stripe TO kit Green(right turn)
2.Green with Red stripe TO kit Yellow (left turn)
3.Red with Orange stripe TO kit Brown (tail/park)
4.Green with Purple stripe TO kit Red (brake)

Attach the white ground wire (using the M6x16 bolt) to a threaded hole
located on in the tail lens compartment.

Check with the de-bug plug

The Disco I/II pinouts seem to be the same.

Be careful about aftermarket wiring. It has been known to cause faults in the electrical system. Of course, since the genuine wiring harnesses are on intergalactic backorder, it's a bit of a catch-22. Good luck with it. Although, Greg, if you're doing it, I'm sure you'll do it with painstaking precision. Good lord. Have you all seen how the man wired his lights?

"Be careful about aftermarket wiring. It has been known to cause faults in the electrical system."

I hear this everytime the post comes up, yet have never heard from someone who has had bad results from using the NAPA / Walmart solution...

Thanks everyone. I'm still down in Ga at my parents house, but will try the little Walmart here in small town USA. :-)

If they have that kit in stock, it will give me a project for tomorrow. I spent all day yesterday and today cutting roads on my family farm and a wiring project will be a nice break from cutting timber. :-)

Thanks again,
Greg

PS - Alyssa, I'm still not happy with the light wiring though.........

Got the wiring installed today. I took quite a few pictures and will try to get something written up for Ho to post in Tech files for the D2 trailer setup using a Walmart kit as John suggested.

The D2 setup is different than that of the D1 listed in the tech section. The trailer harness plug is outside the vehicle behind the passenger tail light. It is a funky 9 wire deal and is more square in shape. It has a rubber cover on it and is attached to the rear wall.

I ended up pulling it back inside the truck into the rear compartment, and spliced into the wiring there, soldering each connection.

I had enough wire with the kit to get the trailer plug wire tied down next to my hitch. It hangs right there. If I go off road and expect my rear bumper to hang, I simply can cut the wire tie and secure the wire higher up.

I'll get the pictures to Ho with a short right up soon, giving credit to the appropriate people of course.

Thanks again,
Greg

Okay, if anyone is interested, I made a little writeup based on my experience with the Walmart universal kit on a 2001 D2. Also, there are pictures of the install included. Enjoy. :-)

John,
We've had quite a few customers that have had problems with them. Maybe they're just not on Discoweb :-)
