I went to the YMCA the other day and my ID card is attached to my key chain. After he swiped my card in their electronic card reader I could not get my remotte to open the door locks. Is this just a coincidence?

Yup just a coincidence. the card reader is looking for a bar code, magnetic strip or magnetic number in the card. It is not strong enough to erease the code in the remote. even if it is a "long range" reader. they work on a 12 or 24 volt powersupply. at that low voltage the EMF dissipates greatly by the millimeter away from the reader.
