Help my tach is not working. When you start the car, the tach rises from 0 to about 400rpm's. It will randomly work and show the actual rpm's. Help, I dont know where to start. I am supposed to trade it in tomorrow

Sounds like the alternator has or is going out.
There is a lead off the back of the alternator that goes directly to the tach. Check to see that the connection is good. If it is, most likely your tach is bad.

John, be certain to check it before you drive anywhere - I didn't follow the alternator advice and wound up on the back of a tow truck.

Cheers,

I broke down in Gallup in a snowstorm right next to 4 different auto parts stores. Minimum wait was 5 days. I had to have a friend buy a factory replacement for $600 in Albuquerque and drive it out. Don't ignore the signs and spend $200 for a rebuilt or do it yourself.

No matter how cynical you are, and how many posts here you regard as complete BS, listen to this one. Rebuild that alternator.

Oh, and as tempting as the $125 Pepboy rebuilt deals sound, you will make full use of that lifetime warranty by spending random Saturdays redeeming it.

..only speaking from my experience as a cynical jackass.

600 bucks for a new alt is a joke. buy a rebuild or new one for much less. nothing great about those MM ones that come on our trucks.
and also make sure that your routing is correct if you have recently replaced the belt.

Same thing happened to me about three months ago. Alternator also started intermittant squealing. Turned out the shitty pep boys belt I bought had stretched and was starting to disintigrate on the alternator pulley. Check the alternator for black dust/powder. This is an indication that the belt is slipping and is wearing away. If new belt is installed and wires look ok and still have the problem, have the alternator looked at. With 125k on mine it only in need of a service including bushes and bearings...$75. Don't screw around though because these guys are right get it looked at.

Pep Boys are not the only one's with a crummy rebuild. I went through 3 Bosch rebuilts before I got a good one. This was from a very reliable import shop that got them from out east somewhere. Your problem is certainly the alt. though.

About 4 months ago my Alternator started to go. The Tach stopped working and went in and out. I replaced the alternator and everything worked fine. Now, just tonight I was driving home and i noticed my Tach started to jump around again. It jumps only when Im going between 1000 and 2000 rpms.. Sometimes it jumps all the way to O and other times it will jump from 2000 to 1500 rpms and then back up again. I also noticed that when I am coasting it will sometimes fall to 0 and then when I hit the gas it will kick back in and start working. Do you guys think that I have a bad alternator? I just replaced it with a brand new Bosh a couple months ago. Tomorrow I will check the cables..... This is frustrating.

Thanks to everyone that responded. Sounds like everyone went through the same problem. It was a bad alternator. After the tach, the anti skid lite, speedo, ect. Thanks to everyone for their help. Many times most people on this board know ALOT more about these trucks than land rover does. It was a great truck to have but I am happy to have gotten rid of it. I found out through carfax that the truck was a lemon back in 1996. Also it was sold back to land rover with 19000 miles and came back out with 9000. Beware!

Hmm very weird......

This morning I went out and cleaned the plug that runs from the Tach to the alternator. It was pretty dirty. Plugged it back in and so far, it seems to be working fine. WHo knows how long that will last though. I've read a lot about the belts going bad. How can I tell if my belt isnt as tight as it should. It feels very tight to me. Perhaps it's just one of those things that I should probably replace. My truck has 80k on it now and I dont think the belt has ever been replaced.
