So this weekend the Disco started making a new noise, kind of a whine, when sitting at idle, speeding up the rpms seems to get rid of it, but when it drops again the whine is back. it seems to be coming from the waterpump or nearby there. Any one have any ideas?? Is my waterpump toasted?? Thanks in advance!!!!

Corey, does it sound a bit like cavitating power steering pump?

Sounds like the elusive drive belt whine.

Replace the tensioner bearing and the serpentine belt-it might go away.

The TSB says to do the above, but I've also been told that if the tensioner spring begins to get weak, it will make the same noise.

Corey-I spent a small fortune replacing everything but my air conditioning compressor and it turned out to be the tensioner/belt. Of course, I didn't find the TSB until I had replaced the water pump, alternator and power steering pump!

I second the stethoscope but that tends to be a problem when running considering there is a spinning fan and belt blocking all the said parts.

Had the same problem mine turned out to be a shot water pump. Does it make a kind of weird noise when you shut down the engine? If so the water pump may be the culprit.

it does make the wierd noise on shut down. but there is a tensioner on Ebay to so maybe I will do both. Any better place than the dealer to get a waterpump? Local dealer wants $224 for the pump alone!!! Thanks for the advice too!!!!

Yesterday's british pacific price was $75.oo.

You may not need to replace the entire tensioner. The bearing will only cost you $10 at the most, the belt a little more. It is much cheaper to replace the bearing and the belt than the water pump. Pulling the tensioner off and cleaning the mating surface may also help, unless the spring is becoming weak.

I would not replace the water pump until I had exhausted the other avenues, but do as you wish.
