It didn't do shit for mine but I didn't expect it to (maybe thats the reason I didn't notice a difference) :-)

ok 42k more like it! I have put a k&n in my 98 and I could tell a noticeable difference when first accelerating. The crap about improved gas mileage is bull. But to answer your question, yes there is a noticeable difference and is probably the best "bang for your buck" mod possible for a disco.

Are you sure this isn't just the "placebo effect"?

On my Disco at 99K miles (almost 100K...you're all invited to the party!!!), the K&N, Bosch +4's, and Magnecor's probably allow the engine to run as if it were new...

none of these mods are going to seriously alter the amount of air-fuel in the chamber to affect BMEP and increase performance, nor will they reduce the adverse effect of any blow-by due to the wearing rings in my aged engine...

I wouldn't give an 8 year old horse steroids and anticipate winning the Kentucky derby...I will, however, wait for that horse to die where I will then proceed to beat it like every other newbie thread...

I had terrible results with the K&N on my 98 Discovery. The oil from the filter coated the Mass Air Flow Sensor and caused it to bite the dust. A $248 part. Ouch! Since then, my K&N is sitting here in the garage.

I also noticed that the K&N did not filter out as much of the fine dust as the paper one does. As far as better performance, I did notice that it sounded more peppy, but I don't think I got any real performance improvement.

Thanks,
Mike B.

I did not notice any change in performance with
the drop in rectangular K&N filter. No change in fuel efficiency.
At 120K, I replaced the entire stock airbox with
a large K&N cone filter in attempts to improve decreased fuel efficiency (12-13 mpg) over the past 10K.
I can honestly say the cone intake was the primary factor that made my
96 D1 run like it did at 80K (14-15 mpg again) so for me it has delayed the inevitable just a little bit.
Still no noticeable improvement in performance though.

I think the increased fuel efficiency of the K&N is relative when comparing it to another filter....What does the existing filter look like? Is it completely caked with crap like when you pull the lent catcher out of a dryer after a couple loads? ...In this case replacing the filter with a new one of any brand will make the 15% hp increase and improved gas mileage believable. (K&N's do have a louder intake sound so they must be sucking in more air so probably filtering less)

I like the cone filters but not really on vehicles that have frequent mud and water in the engine bay. Its not really the mud that worries me as much as when I am cleaning it (prolly just put a plastic bag over the cone).

I took the OEM air box and pulled off the restricting "megaphone" thing but still need a new air filter. I have been tempted to route some aircraft grade ducting to the airbox to bring in cool air from the front (We used to do this to route air from the front air dam to the front brakes on cars) ...Probably just as well off with buying a snorkel or making my own.

I pieced together my own with common 3" piping parts, fairly easy.
At the time, I had 120K on it and was not too concerned about less filtering.
Now over 129K and truck still has been running
surprisingly well. I was ready to trade it in but now will probably drive it until the engine or transmission dies.
I had one of the drop in type K&N filters before, cleaned it regularly. So it was not clogged up much. I know the claims of increase fuel efficiency with these filters have not been based on the best science but somehow it helped me (?how?).
It is somewhat louder but my borla exhaust drowns out everything when driving. I hope I don't start losing my hearing.
