Mounting a Warn 8000 with steel cable. Any reason not to use the haus? I hear the kevlar rope can bind and get snagged in the rollers so they prefer haus treatment. Any reason the haus should not be used with the steel?

Ron,

the haus is fine if you have a regular pull but if you need to winch backwards or extreem angles it will cut the line. Guess how I know?

BTW....I have a haus fairlead for sale.

Ron and Brian,

just installed "rope" on my Warn winch which has the roller fairlead and am considering on changing it to a haus. so:

Brian - does your haus for sale have smooth edges around the opening? if so, how much?

Ron - if the above works out with Brian, I'll have a roller fairlead for sale for probably very cheap.

let me know guys.

Jamie,

I will take a look at it tonight. It is somewhere in the garage. I have no idea what it is worth.

I prefer hawse. Doesn't stick out as much, no rollers to damage, lighter, simpler. But I have a synthetic line now, so I have roller fairlead. One day I would like to switch to polished aluminum hawse.

Brian,
Hawse has the same radius on the bends/edges of the opening as the rolers (sometimes actually better). I pulled myself backwards with the cable fished under the vehicle. This was the most extreme angle I ever used and the pull was moderately hard. No kinks on the cable and only little gouges on the bottom edge of front bumper. So I don't understand how you can damage the cable. Since I don't doubt you sustained damage, I'd like to know more details about your winching situation. Thanks.

Milan,

My angle was very extreeme. I was not winching myself I was routing the cable under the truck through the rear d-ring and back toward the front again. I was on a trail that I couldn't get off of and I couldn't really work on the truck. I had bent my rear trailing arm up and it pulled my pass. rear wheel into the door. I was using the winch and the rear d-ring to pull my axle back away from the door. It was not the opening radius of the hawse it was the outside radius edge that cut my cable. You may need to go look at yours to understand what i am talking about but once you see how sharp that edge is you will see what I mean.

This is a very extreem example but it could happen.

On the other hand....I have broken rollers too.

I have used both and went back to the rollers. But in reality I have so many other issues I have not thought about this debate in quite some time.

Damn...

What is all this talk of "Backwards Winching"???

You guys are getting esoteric here.

I like Hawse for simplicity and clearence reasons. I have found that the "cable under the truck trick" won't work for me anymore.
