I've got a 96 SE7 with overactive/dirty/bad (whatever) anti-lock sensors. I pulled the "Anti Lock" light bulb out of the dash and am now wondering if I can inactive the ABS system and just go to "regular" braking. How do I do it? Other than loosing ABS functionality is there any other concern, safety issues, etc.? Any advise?

pop the cover under the steering column, and remove the ABS fuse.

Don't remove that one, it will set off the check engine light. Remove the fuse under the hood or unplug the round plug going into the ABS control box (or whatever) under the hood

Easier to unplug power feed to ABS pump - the connector to the ABS valve body are just sensor wires.

Carter, I've removed this fuse maybe a hundred times, and it never set the CEL (on the 96 D1). It has nothing to do with CEL, AFAIK. And ABS comes back up as soon as the fuse is reinstalled.

Sure, whenever I pull it the check engine light goes off and it throws a code (something like ABS line low fault -something like that, not 100% sure), put the fuse back in, clear the code and all is good unless you pull it again and then the same thing happens..... So I'm pretty sure its pulling the fuse that leads to the code, plus when I ask around here everyone says thats normal and I am just pulling the wrong fuse. Been pulling the one under the hood ever since and everything is good.

oh yeah, 98 DI

at present, i have an ECU from a '98 disco (put it in to test my old one, and left it there). no difference. It looks to me that you have another ABS problem creeping in.

Please confirm - if I unplug the round plug going into the ABS control box (which I believe is the same as the power feed to the ABS pump) then the ABS will be inactivated without tripping a sensor, and I'll have "regular" braking without causing mechanical or electrical issues. And, all I need to do to reactivate the ABS is plug the power feed back into the ABS pump. Is the right?

Yeah, I have pulled the ABS fuse under the steering column several times too, never tripped the Check Engine light. I drove back to NJ from Colorado that way once. Mine's a 97.

Well I just went out and did it again for shits and giggles and as soon as I pull it the light comes on.... My ABS works (when the fuse is in) though, and I know I'm not the only one around here who has reported this. Oh well, try it I guess but if the check engine light comes on then thats probablly why.

I appreciate the advise. One other question. If the check engine light does come on then how do I turn it off?

put the fuse back in and wait for a few days untill it goes off, or have a super cool autozone that will clear codes (most just read them for you but aren't allowed to hit the 'clear' button)

Brad - there are two different connectors - one goes to the pump itself and one goes to the valve body - unplug the one to the pump.

If you unplug this - it will not set off any ECU codes whatsoever - but the ABS light on the dash will illuminate. Plugging it back in will turen the light back off.

ABS fuse under my steering console trips my Check Engine if I leave it out too long. I usually just reset it with my cheap code reader. Would it be better to pull a different fuse so that my CE light is free to report real problems?

yeah Jack, try pulling the one under the hood instead if your trips the light like mine does
