I took my D2 in for service about four months ago and I was informed my rear axle was leaking on each side. at this time the dealer replaced both of the seals. within two weeks they were leaking again, so I took it back and they replaced the seals again. It leaked a third time. AT this point I told them to check the breather, so on the third time they cleaned the vent. I just had it fixed the fourth time and they replaced the seals and put sealant around the seals and guess what...within week both sides are leaking again! Now the dealer tells me that the differential needs to be torn apart to see if the bearings or some other part is worn and is causing the problem. Does this make any sense to anyone? I would just let the damn thing leak, but its getting oil all over the rotors and brake pads which then makes the rear brakes grab like crazy. I hate to get rid of the truck so soon but my God, this is getting rediculous! Its a 2001 with 88,000 miles on the clock. Has anyone had this problem? Is the dealer mechanic an idiot? Should I just let it leak and deal with it? any help at this point would be much appreciated. |

You have a bent axle housing. Thats pretty much the only thing that could cause the seals to go bad 4 times in a year. Ron |

may be a stupid question, but how expensive is that to fix. this has been a problem on mine since about a week after I had it. Should I keep it or get rid of it? |

If it is a bent axle housing I would call a place like http://www.roverlandparts.com and price a complete axle assembly (caliper to caliper) I've seen them for sale at differant places for around $600. I just looked and roverland has a complete '98 axle assembly minus rotors and calipers for $575. All orders above $100 include free shipping.

This may sound stupid but if you have to continually replace the same part most likely the problem lies elsewhere. One time I bought an Integra that had the alternator replaced 3 times within 2 months before I bought it (found receipts in the glove box). The first night I drove it [with the headlights on] the battery died going down the road, I jumped it of and flew home using the moonlight....I put it on the lift and within 5 minutes found that the connector that plugs into the alternator was bad, not the alternator itself. That simple fix cost the previous owner over $600.

I believe that this must be DII right? Don't know if they have an axel vent tube, but if so maybe it is clogged and causing too much pressure in the axel, forcing oil through the seals. I thought that I read somewhere that this is a possibility and have not experienced it personally so take it for what it is worth. |

the dealer reported cleaning the vent the third time in. now they want to rebuild the differential. I am just trying to figure out if its worth the money or not. I think I will break someones neck if it leaks after replacing the whole freakin thing. |
