I wanted to post this as an update to Mike, James, Dan(s), Tate and the rest of the crew that watched my 5speed blow out a few weekends back in GWNF.

Finally got everything back together, bottom line was the clutch broke-into quite a few pieces in fact. I used the opportunity to replace both cylinders at the same time so most of the components are good to go in that respect. My wife was driving it back to Norfolk from Richmond mon afternoon when the clutch pedal went to the floor again as she was downshifting in traffic. Luckily my wife knew how to powershift and in this case the clutch held and she limped it home in 4th and 3rd, disregarding lights and stop signs at will. Today we bled the clutch fluid-which was full of bubbles b/c I bet the guy's replacing the cylinders didn't give a rip and just poured the fluid in-so now she works again. The wife came up big again as she can manipulate the wrench over the bleed off screw a lot easier than I can (smaller hands...) so she took charge and I played pedal pusher, resevoir filler and cheerleader.
All in all the expeirence wasn't too costly (under $1k, which is a lot better than at transfer case or a transmission-or both) and most of that was b/c the vehicle was stranded in Richmond and we needed it back so we paid for the great repair service.
I wanted to say thanks again to all from that weekend, we'll be back soon. I'm also contemplating sending my wife to mechanics school since she seems to be the one stepping up lately.
Bottom line for those with rare Discos with 5 speeds-don't let your clutch go to 140k and not expect it to shatter on the trail, and when you get it replaced make sure the air is out of the lines before you go on the highway. :-)

I have to give her credit where it's due. Not only did she let me buy the Disco, she wasn't phased by all of the money we spent getting her to pass Va inspection (and all the things it "needed" like a Hi-lift, Hellas, snatch block, tow straps, shackles, etc...), doesn't mind the lack of headliner, didn't bitch when I broke the clutch in the streambed, drove it home with no real clutch pedal pressure, she didn't hesitate to crawl underneath and turn the wrench.

Now if I could get her to stop ramming Honda's with the winch bumper we'd be in business!

I have a 96 Disco 5 spd with 180k. When changing from 1st to 2nd sometimes it grinds a little. I was wondering if it was the clutch or the transmission?

syncronisors. I spelt it wrong pardon me. Depending on the grind depends on the concern. Does it do it all the time? Try to double clutch that could help.

Man I have a hard time convincing the wife to spend the time to drop it off for regular service. Does Your wife have a sister?

When I shift 1st to 2nd it does not grind all the time. When it is in a grinding kind of mood(my truck) I hold the clutch in a bit longer and it doesn't grind, but not all the time.
Phillip you live in Tarboro? Do you drive the green D-90 I see in Rocky Mount? I am just up 95 in Redneck Rapids.

Sometimes during the cold mornings we have had this winter I would get some grinding I would just double clutch and shift slow that would solve the problem, when it warmed up it would do fine..
Yeah, thats me I have heard there was a D-90 or 2 in Rocky Mount I have only seen one and it was an AA Yellow soft top. I feel safe to say it was me you saw in RM. My family has some land in Warren County not to far from RR

hey Lester, completely off topic, but from reading the post, sounds like you are in Norfolk (or at least the area)? My fiance is from VA Beach, and we are down there about once a month or so, sometimes with my truck. I've always wondered if there is anyplace to go offroading down there as it must be the lifted truck capital of the world. everyone with their Pungo offroad stickers. the grinding comes from worn synchro's

both lucas transfix and redline MTL have friction adding compounds that will let you run the sychros longer with less grind...give them a try

I've met ray's wife and she is a great lady. When you see her, the last thing you expect is for her to put those dainty hands anywhere near grease, but she does!! Oh and he has a beautiful little girl (Olivia) who is the cutest little thing who likes to flirt a lot. Ray's gonna have his hands full!!!

Mike-
I'll tell Lisha that you think she's dainty, she'll get a kick out of that.

BTW, Jason I do have a sister-in-law who is a younger version of my wife, unfortunatly minus the mechanical inclinations at this point. She's to busy being a senior in college-but graduation and reality are fast approaching.

As an update for anyone interested, the clutch pressure is slowly returning as the vehicle is driven to and from work this week. We've had no more failures at this point so I am beginning to believe that she's back in action.
Now on to more off roading and mods!
