whats wrong with the TDI's other than emissions. I dont thing it would take much to bring the Td5 up to par.

Just read that the 300TDi is being remade in Brazil, and has been increased to 2.785 litres and a whopping 135PS @ 3800rpm, giving 277lb ft of torque @ 1400rpm, bit pricey but makes a TD5 look silly, given its reliance on silly electronics.
just my tuppence worth.

I believe you may be talking about the HS 2.8L engine, which yes does kick serious cahones.

Nothing wrong with my 300TDi.
There is a local (rangie specialist) tuning mob who reckon they can get more power & torque from a 300TDi than the TD5 (50% more than stock), with just turbo & fuel work. I'm just a bit sceptical of reliability....

There are people putting in the 2.8. It can be had from England for around 5k.....

Isn't that IH 2.8 engine also being used in the Cross Lander?

This is the engine that Mike @ ECR is currently installing in his D90. Looks to be a bit better than the stock 300 TDi.
