2 out of 3 ain't bad. It's not like it causes them any trouble - they do have the CDL in other markets...

HEY Land Rover man, are you listening? I would by a new one (someday) if it had CDL!! Not a chance if it don't.

And while you're at it, throw in the Tdi.

hhhmmm... interesting

I post in a VW forum (vwvortex.com) and a while back, when VWAG released the 25th anniversary GTI in europe, it wasn't originally slated for the US markets. Well, vwvortex put together a petition page and sent all the results to VWAG. Several months later, the GTI 25th anniversary was here (disguised as the GTI 337), and not only did VW listened, they gave vwvortex members first dibs on the cars before they were released to the general public. I thought that was a nice gesture since the 337 is a very limited production model. I'm sure it wasn't solely the petition of the vwvortex members that made VWAG release that car here but I'm sure it played a big factor. I just don't know if our hosts here are in favor for doing something like that. I'm particularly happy with my 99D1 but I wouldn't mind having access to a D110 tdi

I was just at LRU, and one of the head honcho guys (you know, one of the ones you see in all the videos...) said that there was a VERY good likelihood that '04's would have CDL. Like any good LR person, though, he won't believe it until he can hold it in his hands. LR is very much like that. They are actually having to switch back to the old design.

I would like to get a Discovery with a new Tdi and CDL along with ETC.

It is interesting that you brought that up because last month Land Rover hosted a customer "rant" and "rave" session at Eastnor in England. They had new Freelander and RR owners come in and spend the day with the engineers and tell them all the things the like and disslike about the cars. The report is that they took it seriously and have already implemented changes that customers have been demanding into the new Freelander. Maybe now is the time for people like us to start petitioning LRNA for a change - on their behalf - it would mean greater sales, and greater customer satisfaction.

Also, I am happy to hear that LR is starting to get quality control awards in England and the EU.

Ask the salesperson if they know what CDL stands for...

Well, anyone other than Alyssa and a few others.

LR does listen, if somewhat selectively. If you notice that 2002 freelanders didn't have an armrest, but 2003's do.
The person at LR I was talking to said that the engineers were so confident with the ETC that they thought CDL was unnecessary. They also said that it would compete with the ETC. It's taken a lot of convincing for the engineers to admit that losing CDL was a mistake & that ETC works better with CDL. There was also the potential for stupid customers again. He definately showed his frustration with the situation.

CDL has been available as an OPTION in the rest of the world....on the D2 and Defender so there is no reengineering required, just reprogramming of the computer that selects the parts to include CDL on NAS spec vehicles

Actually, Chris, accaording to my source at LRNA, the NAS transfer case is different than the ROW transfer case. It is not possible to install CDL on current NAS t-cases. As I understand, CDL only became an option on 2003 ROW DIIs, and has not been previously available. In order to go back to CDL in NAS vehicles, we will have to go back to the old style/ROW style transfer case. SO, it isn't just a matter of computer programming.

Problem: Try writting an email to LRNA, the only place to do that is through the Ford Web Site - as far as I can tell, unless someone knows differently.

I was there April 2, 3, &4. It was the "Dipped in Green" course... one of the courses you are supposed to take when you first join LR. I was just a little late in going :-) It's LR History, retail vision, team building, and some off-roading. It was a lot of fun. I'm not going to say who told me about the CDL... I don't feel it's necessary for everyone to know, and I was asking for my own personal information.

Who's email is this at Land Rover? Is this the right person to bug about diesel engines and CDL in the states?

we represent a small minority of Rover owners. Perhaps it is a waste of time to bug these folks about all this, however maybe it is worth while.

Hey Alyssa, isn't "Dipped in Green" fun?

Are they still doing it in Maryland? I did it about 3 years ago. Good times.

As for whether or not LR will listen to this small "minority", I think they will to some degree. LR is a niche brand that survives mainly on it's authenticity. The group of people here are the validators of that authenticity and do what most LR owners only dream of. But the dream is important.

I liked Ascent better :-)
...and the "Beyond" Range Rover training at the Four Seasons in Santa Barbara.
That e-mail is Bill Baker, very high up the food chain. I couldn't find any e-mail addresses, either. The most worthwhile thing you could do is call Owner Care.

It would probably be more effective to get a compilation of letters and send them all at once. Maybe I will work on something to put onto my web site this week end...

If there was a place to verify your ownership of a Rover and to at least voice your opinion on where the company is going, would you be interested in it? I'm not saying it would even be looked at by LR in the end, but would it be worth your time to fill out a form and submit it to a petition? If enough of you feel it would be worth it, maybe Ho or someone here would set it up, or I would on my own. Some day I will have enough money to spend on a new Rover, and I would like it to be true to the heritage, not a sell out to Ford or something.

Land Rover monthly has some spy photos of Cold Weather testing of the new Disco. No mention of CDL, but they think the spare tire is moving from the back door to a location under the rear load area, on the outside like a pick up truck. They do indicate it will have independant suspension.

Press release from NYC auto show....2003 G4 Edition Discovery with CDL. LR often uses specials to get the hang of building a future model... PR reads

Designed to showcase the capability of Discovery, Land Rover will build a limited number of Discoverys modeled after the vehicles currently in use at the Land Rover G4 Challenge event.
Off-road capability is at the core of the Land Rover G4 Edition Discovery. The combination of a 4.6 liter, 217hp V8 engine, five-speed automatic transmission, two-speed transfer case with locking center differential, four-wheel electronic traction control (ETC), and Self-Leveling Suspension (SLS) give the Discovery G4 Edition it's greatest off-road capability ever.
“With this vehicle, we will capture the excitement of the event in a limited edition,” said Greg Gilliland, Discovery model manager. "The G4 Edition Discovery is a vehicle designed specifically with the off-road enthusiast in mind and its capabilities are being showcased throughout the G4 Challenge."

The Land Rover G4 Edition Discovery is painted in Tangiers Orange, just like the real competition vehicles and features an all-new, larger diameter roof rail design called the "Aero" Roof Rail system. Full exterior protection includes the Discovery front A-frame brush bar and rear lamp guards. On the inside the G4 Edition Discovery features an all-new "Foundry" trim finish that includes seats upholstered in “Black Mogul” technical fabric - a material unique to the Land Rover G4 Edition. An in-dash CD player, black leather-wrapped steering wheel, as well as driver and passenger electric seats, complete the G4 interior.
Only 200 of the Discovery G4 Edition will be built with pricing expected to be under $39,000. Availability will be in the third quarter of 2003.

If ETC is so reliable, why do they need it on the G4 "challenge" trucks?
