Took the carrier spider and pinion out of a dana 35 today. When all that shit goes back in is it gonna be nessecery to set pinion backlash etc. when the pinion and ring go back in. had to take it all out to get to the bearing that the pinion spins on needed replacement. I wasn't sure that the backlash and all would be affected?????? thanks. |

Backlash is probably gonna need setting as well as pinion depth. The reasons are that the bearing might not be exactly the same and it might not be on the pinion the same.... Its a good idea to set it. Kyle

If the pinion bearing was bad then checking it before he took it out would be useless... Kyle "Blow me"

yep right on kyle as the bearing smokes it gets thinner causing more backlash I'd check for gauling on the outside of the ring gear...if its at all black it may need a new R&P if it is fine I would just throw it back togather with the same shims that where in there and run it around with some patern indicator compound and see what it throws as a patern, because there is no "crush" in a Dana pinion it may be right on. if it produces a patern other then the current shape worn into the gears getting it back to where it needs to be can be a real fu$%ing (in and out in and out)job

i wonder if it is worth at all to mess with R&P in a D35 (for time spent vs cost&performance reasons). i guess it may be, if it's a maintenance issue. peter |
