under the car on top of the transmission. what is that all about?! am i just not seeing the benefit, other than making dealer service more necessary.

My uneducated guess would be they did this to seal the transmission up better than a long tube with a dipstick will.

Many new vehciles are going with the "sealed for life" philosophy - has nothing to do with sealing the pan.

Many auto trans now beiong produced have no fill or drain whatsoever - you'll probably see more and more of this.

Not good for a towing or trail rig, but for the average Joe - it works just fine. Even Ford's new Torqshift (behind the 6.0 powerstroke) is "sealed for life" and it was designed to tow.

If the fill is on top of the then how do you know when it is full upon re-filling it. I am planning on changing my fluid this weekend but the more I read about this the more of a pain it seems.
