I recently had the top of my 97XD painted after minor rust was detected under the seal of the Alpine window. Luckily it was covered under the LR warranty. Here is the part I need help with...the stock sticker package for the XD's included a large "DISCOVERY" sticker with LR ovals on both ends placed just above the windshield. Obviously this would have to be removed to paint the top. The day I picked up my Disco from the autobody shop, I noticed a raised/embossed impression of that sticker which looked like they just painted over it. The autobody shop said it was a uncommon thing that happens called "Ghosting". They surely didn't paint over it according to them. Is this possible? Or do I need to ruin the paint job at my risk and scrape some of the paint away to see if the sticker is underneath? |

They didnt paint over it and that area is raised because the paint under the stickers was protected from decay. Kyle "Blow me"

Thanks Kyle for the feedback, Can you possibly elaborate on how that reaction creates the raised look? Also, the shop said they stripped it to the metal and then re-painted. Wouldn't that remove any existing substances? |

Well now I have to wonder about them. Stickers that stay ona vehicle for a very long time protect the paint thats under them from the elements. This keeps that paint in tact and retains its original coat thickness. The paint on the rest of the vehicle decays at a certain rate from oxidation and waxing blah blah blah. When you pull the stickers off after a long period of time you will notice that the paint under there is pristene and higher then the rest of the truck. However , if they stripped it and then ran a DA over it with some 80 grit before sanding with 220 or so then you should have no shadow at all. Kyle

It does happen. Many years ago, my friend painted his 79 Trans-Am. It had all the fender flares and the big eagle/bird decal on the hood. I remember seeing the hood on saw horses stripped down bare metal. He painted it black, which was the original color. After he was all done, you could still see the outline of the bird on the hood. I heard it happens more with dark paints as the sun/heat and paint have some chemical reaction on the metal. He ended up putting a factory decal back on. -Matt |

My experience is in line with Kyles, and I can't ever recall ghosting when I took things down to bare steel or glass. One other thing, I would wash the hell out of those areas with Pre Kleeno/Prep Solve to make sure there is no imbedded "sticker" glue lurking that could cause ghosting. |

Thanks for the feedback. It seems fine so far, I replaced the sticker with a new one so it covers it up. I am just hoping I do not have any long term issues with it. |

What is the paint warranty on a 95' Disco? My alpine lights are showing very minor rusting as well. |

Chad, I'm sorry, you are way out of warranty. 6 years/unlimited mileage on corrosion perforation, if vehicle has been dealer inspected yearly. |
