I have a 95 Discovery. In the morning, I get valve noise which goes away after warmed up. In warmer weather, the oil flickers but idle is good. In hotter weather, the oil light comes on when stopping and I get stalling. Not a good problem as I live in Phoenix, so more hot than not. If I restart and do not touch accelerator, engines goes back to normal idle. Do I need to drop pan and have screens cleaned? Or, do I need to use different weight oil, which seems would be just make it more difficult to get to valves? And, do I need to check or replace a solenoid control idle?

The fact that the engine is stalling might be killing the oil pressure - not the other way around - as the oil pump is rpm dependent. Does the light go out when you hold your foot on the gas and keep the revs around 600 rpm? If so focus on getting your idle fixed.

Low oil pressure is usually due to a clogged screen or worn main/rod bearings. You can get some shops to replace the bearings from underneath. Could also be the oil pump is worn.

Its not that big of a deal to drop the pan and check the screen and pull a main bearing cap to check for wear. (If you see copper the bearing is worn out).

A lot of people recommend 20w-50, so you might try it, but I think its too thick for less than about 45 deg F. In Phoenix, I would definately use that weight in the hot months.
