Yesterday while on the normal dull commute along the Mass Pike, a glance in the rear view mirror revealed a cloud of white smoke...Since it followed me rather than some other poor sucker I pulled over. The smell told me it was engine coolant. Looking around, one of the two hoses that go over the right hand valve cover (from drivers seat)was sufficiently porous to allow coolant to escape over the manifold and turn into steam. These hoses lead to the heater matrix. If you have a d1 of similar age and mileage, (95 with 127k) consider replacing them..they are probably ready to let go...... FWIW spotted it early and still had coolant in the overflow tank

I had a similar problem a few months back. I had this mysterious coolant leak, but I could NOT find the problem. I checked all hoses over and over, and still couldnt where the problem was. The dried coolant was white on most of my block, so I knew the general direction it was coming from, but I couldnt see any hoses that were cracked. Finally, one day, when the hood was up, the coolant decided to squirt out at my windshield, and I saw where the stuff was coming from. Turns out it was a tiny crack on the underside of a 2 inch hose. I went through so much coolant.. it was pathetic -Jared |
