Bob,

Please provide more info on your D1. How many miles, does it go off road, what condition is it in? What year D1? What do you want to do with your next Rover?

99 d1, 64k, great condition. Only problem was a bad head gsaket and sticking exhaust valves. Had dealer install a reconditioned head. Almost no offroading. Use it for messing around with garden stuff and dogs. Daily commuter. Looking to do the same in the future. Main concern is reliability.

Sell it to Paul. :-) Seriously, I wouldn't consider it from the reliability standpoint, if you've already had the valves addressed. If you want a bit more room, something just a little different, maybe you want ACE, etc., then trade. But a '99D1 is a good truck, excepting the valve-issue. It'd make a good truck for Paul... heh heh.... :-)

Bob, it sounds like you'd like a DII. Better pickup, more room, more comfortable interior (unless you have long legs), better on-road ride.

And the DII has better windshield height if you are tall....no more ducking to see under the upper edge. Also a little more rear seat legroom and accessability....still not great.

Owning both a 1996 D1 with 145k miles on it, and a 1999 DII with 65k on it. I can say that you would probably be happier with the DII if you're not taking it offroad much. The DII is alot more comfy, quicker, etc. but can definitely still hold it's own offroad. Only problem we've had out of the DII is piddly crap, she's a good runner. However, my 96 with all it's miles I wouldn't hesitate to hop in right now and cruise across the country. I'm sure something would break, but I have to say it's never left me stranded (with the exception of slicing a brake line, which was my fault).. Drive the DII and give it hell.. you'll love it.

The DII is a much better truck in nearly every way. More room, better ride, and in a truck that is not as old you will have warranty again. Other than things already mentioned IE taller windscreen, you will have one of the last true l;and rovers. Ford is going to make the Disco into an Explorer soon. I am planning on trading my DII for an 04/05 DIII just as soon as Ford releases the 05.

Matt,

"The DII is a much better truck in nearly every way."

Maybe evry way according to you. There are still some very beneficial reasons for a D1: Full-floating axles, CDL, and better off road geometry would be the first to come in mind. The D1 can be made into a better off road monster than the D1.

However, for daily use the D2 is hard to beat. It can also be made to perform well off road, but it still does not have the modification possibilities of the D1.

Bob,

"99 d1, 64k, great condition."

Your D1 is young and there are pros and cons to both 1's and 2's. You say "Almost no offroading." Well Bob, that means you still haven't got your $ worth out of it. If I were Bob, I would keep your D1 and wait to see what LR has in store for the future. There's a lot of crap floatin around out of the rumor mill about diesal LR's in the future and of course the Ford inspired body and motor changes.

I think you should just keep your D1 and see what happens with LR. If ford f**ks up the disco then you might wanna get something else later on.
