I have a 97 Disco and my speedometer fluctuates after driving two hours on the highway. The rest of the truck is fine. I haven't notices any change in the idle. I think it is my VSS, from what I can gather off the site. As far as my alternator, everything seems to work fine, so I don't think that is what is going. Can anyone tell me what exactly the VSS does?
Thanks

I noticed the VSS when going up long inclines. My 97 disco acted normal in all others respects. Got my Vss from Discount for about $64 and change out in 15 minutes. Sounds to me that your VSS is the problem.

does just your speedometer fluctuate? or does your actual truck's speed/power fluctuate? i do not think the VSS does anything to the instruments, so if you are seeing a fluctuation in the speedometer only, then probably not your issue.

I am only seeing it in my instrument. The actual speed/power of my vehicle does not change. I am going to take the VSS off this weekend and see if it needs cleaning. But since everything is running fine, I don't know what it is.

don't take off the VSS. it has nothing to do with your problem.

could be a bad speedo cable or the speedo itself.

There is no cable, I thought that everyting was electric. I don't think it is the speedometer because it has only done it three times. All three times it was while I was driving on the highway after about two hours. The last two weeks while driving around town nothing has happened.

If your tach is bouncing too it is most likely your alternator getting ready to go. I replaced mine with a rebuild about 10k ago and some days my tach/speedo bounce for a couple of seconds. I'm going to bite the bullet and go with a Mean Green now.
