Has anyone mounted an awning on their adventure roof rack? How did you mount it? Were did you but it?

I'm sure that you could find an RV awning from a camper/RV store and then make it fit by making a custom mouting.

Eric, Yea I know. I just don't want to re-invent the wheel if someone has already done it.

well the problem with most RV awning systems is going to be that they only work because they mount to the bottom of the RV also. the part that pulls away from the RV is the large 'tube' that holds the awning, not vice versa... Its kind of hard to explain, you sort of have to see it work to understand. If nobody knows what the hell this jibberish I'm speaking is and you are actually interested maybe I can round up a pic or two. LOL

I understand you but I saw an old series rig at MAR that had an awning on it. It was entered in the safari contest. I wish I had spent a little more time looking at it.

you know, come to think of it I want to say there is somebody that makes an awning just for this purpose. Perhapse a google search is in order. I would say you are probablly going to need something pretty much designed for this (or something else besides RV use) because even if you find one that would work only mounted up top (like from a pop up or something), I doubt you will find one sort enough to work w/ the disco.

does anyone rember the truck that I am talking about that was ar MAR last fall? It was a really clean series or defender. It has a custom built-in tool-box in the rear. The Awning material had a british flag on it. The guy who owned the rig was grey and possibly in his 60's.

Neal, how about PVC? Make a larger tube at front and rear of the rack and clamp it down. Then, take two smaller tubes with awning material between them to insert into the larger tubes. If you want the down riggers back to the truck like carter mentions, consider a PVC plug to insert into the center of the hub on your rims. The PVC awning material could just be rolled up and tied to the rack when not in use.

I haven't tried this, but it sounds reasonable enough to work.

Neal, try www.carefreeawnings.com they make a large variety to choose from good quality, the legs fold up into the unit and the whole thing rolls up into a zipper bag. I have one on my pop up camper but it will be on my roof rack soon enough.

Ooh, I always wanted to do that. I was thinking about rolling the canvas around a small pipe, inserting that in a large pipe with a slit, so you could pull out the canvas through the slit. The small pipe would have handles to twist it back shut. I don't know if it would actually work, but I did think about it for a long time.

Neal

I think I know the guy you're talking about. I let him know that you had some questions about it. It was on a Def 90, and I'll post a pic if it is okay with him.

Neal,

The guy that you are talking about is from Florida. His awning is from Cabela's. Just do a search for awnings on www.cabelas.com and you will find it.

I made one from an old 6' wide 8' long movie screen. You know, the pull down kind that roll up while you are watching a movie! :-)

I took a 2.5" pvc pipe and cut a line, length wise with a table saw. I then took a pipe end cap (not sure what it is actually called) and put a notch right in the center for the screen mount. (Note: It has to be perfect so that the screen will recoil properly). I then inserted the screen through the pipe with the screen base (which is thicker at the bottom, doubled over) on the outside of the pipe, "threaded" through the groove I cut.

I cut of the end of the pipe so that the other end cap would fit flush with the mounting post on the screen. I drilled a hold in the end cap and afixed it to the pipe.

I spray painted the tube (pipe) matt black and mounted it to my Thule rack next to my Steelhorse basket. Sure enough, it worked great. I pulled out the screen (drivers side) and used two tent poles to support the outermost edge (screen base) by inserting the posts through grommets already installed on the screen. I then tied it down with tent rope, staked it in the ground and I was all set. When I was done, I simply took the poles away, gave the screen a tug and it recoiled back into the tube.

This description may be difficult to understand, and I don't have photos. I trashed the "awning" while moving a few months ago when I went a little crazy and threw a bunch of stuff away because I "had too much crap" laying around.

It was cheap, looked cool and was very functional. The white screen helped bounce away the heat too.

I know you wanted something to mount to your rack..so fogive me if this is irrelevant..

BUt check out ezup ( or ez-up) .com

This is whhat I have been using ( the dome model) for camping. It folds up to about the size of 2 large camping chairs in its own sack, and sets up in like 2 min max!

I stake it to the ground, and im all good

It fits nice in the trunk and doesnt weigh a ton either

I know its not attached to your truck rack, but if your looking for function, it might be a decent 100 dollar investment
