So I just finished putting on my new manifold, CArburator set up. The Carb idles well, very well actually. But here is the problem, not only does it have a hard time starting, but when you try and drive the damn truck it stalls. Keep in mind it idles damn well. I think fuel pump, I replaced two one barrel carbs with one four barrel carb. Fuel Pump? |

What kind of carb did you get? Best to do a web search on that model of carb for tech info. I don't know what size engine you are running, but I can't imagine any off the shelf 4-barrel carb marketed to V8 guys would be jetted properly for a 3.5 or even a 3.9 L V8. Your idle circuit uses it's own jets, seperate from the main circuit, so your mains are likely in need of downsizing. I'd imagine the idle jets are probably too large as well...(how's the plugs and/or exhaust tip looking?) Tell us more. When parked, does the engine rev freely when your floor the gas, or does it want to sputter and die (this would indicate accelerator pump problem)? Can you rev the engine to a set RPM (like 3000 or 4000) and hold it there, and what does the exhaust look like? Basically, I'm guessing it is jetted super rich, but to compound problems, your engine's vacuum signal likely is not sufficient to allow the carb to meter the correct amount of fuel. BTW, WRT the fuel pump being suspect, are you able to drive the truck like 1/4 mile before it stalls, or is it right after you apply a load and get on the gas? If the former, then possibly a fuel pump issue as the fuel in the bowl should provide enough gas to get you going for a short distance. If the latter, the fuel pump isn't the problem.

What parts you are using - solex, zenith, holly ? . Did you rebuild the carb first so you can rule out vacuum issues? Check the diaphram on the accelerator pump on the carb. If it is torn it may bog down when you give it gas but still idle fine. There's good onfo on needed fuel pressure and fuel pump rebuild options @ Brabyn's range rover site. |

It is an edelbrock 500cfm carb. I can rev the shit out of the engine, it won't do anything strange I can keep it at what ever RPM I want and it stays there no problems. It doesn't sputter and die until I try and drive it and put a load on it. I can't even get 1/4 of a mile, then again my drive way is a huge hill and I can't get up that. I think I can rule out vacuum issues pretty easily, the diaphram is also brand new so I don't think that is it, all parts are brand new actually. The exhaust doesn't look much different then it did before, I haven't checked the plugs yet, I'll do that and get back to you. |

I still don't believe it's your fuel pump (I could be wrong). The fuel requirements are not that much (if any) greater than the dual carbs you were running earlier. If it was the fuel pump, then you should have experienced the same problems with the duals (unless the truck wasn't running with duals). Also, you should still be able to move a fair distance with the fuel in the float bowl alone even if the fuel pump was suspect. How's the timing look? I would imagine you removed the distributor when you replaced the manifold. BTW, contact www.aluminumv8.com and inquire about the out-of-the-box jetting of that Edelbrock with your engine. I still believe it is jetted improperly for your engine (unless you bought the carb and manifold from them...). |
