I have been looking at getting a set of the new Pro Comp Xterrain tires. For the 16 inch tires, they want upwards of $340. the price drops considerably when they are 15 inch tires.

Has anybody had any bad luck putting 15 inch rims on a disco, or know of any potential problems?

I have discussed this with a couple of other drivers and one of them seemed to feel that the 15 inch rim would not allow the proper amount of air to circulate, to cool the rotors. The end result being possibly warped rotors.

Any thoughts?

Mike:
I have also been hampered by the cost of 16" tires. The only reason I'm NOT using 15" tires is the added cost of new rims. Now that I have a Series project truck that likely won't be drivable any time soon, the 15" rims from the Series may find their way onto the Disco with Mudders for wheeling use (the series rims aren't exactly easily balanced due to past damage).

Peace,
Paul

What is the backspacing on those series rims, Paul? That balljoint comes pretty close to the passenger side tire with a 16" tires. Put a tire on the 15" that is a little too thick in the middle it may rub...

I would say that up to 35" tire size, the 15" rims give a better sidewall height to rim size ratio for off-road. Just get the 15s and stop worrying. Enjoy new rubber.:-)

I have 15x7" beadlocks for sale. 4" bs if you're interested.

Go with the 15" rims. As you've noticed the tires are much cheaper and give you more sidewall when aired down. I've never heard of anyone with 15" rims having problems related to air flow or anything else for that matter. Use the money you save on the tires to purchase the new rims, if you shop around you can find them for around $50 a rim. Steel wheels are better off road than our alloys because they bend instead of crack. Plus, most aftermarket Rims have less backspacing which means your tires will be further away from the center of your vehicle (greater offset) anyway. This provides better turn radius than stock and/or allows for the fitting of wider tires in case you're Texan or just into the wide look.
Seriously though, I can think of no reason to avoid 15" rims.

I have 15x8" rims on one of my discos and have never experienced any problems, however, try to match your new tyres rolling diameter to that of the original 16" otherwise, your mileage and speed readings will be slightly out.

That is my point. 4" of backspace will put your wheel almost an inch and a half farther out. If the series rims have the same 5.37ish inch backspace as the alloys, it puts the tire a half inch closer to the ball joint. This is just from looking at the distance. I haven't measured

I was looking at the American Racing Rims from Gulf Coast Rovers, or the ones from Disco Trek. Both are in the $50-$55 per rim range and fit the Disco lug pattern. On Disco Trek, they claim to maintain the original backspacing.

Either way, a nice set of black rims on a Red Disco (mine) would look pretty good, and I can save the alloys for a nice set of tires that won't "sing" as much as off road tires do. (I don't mind the song, but my wife hates the tune... if you know what I mean)

For the most part, I agree with the increased sidewall height offered by the 15-inch tires. with an overall height of around 31-inches, a 15-inch tire will sit pretty close to the stock height.

I agree with Neil though, I want to think this through before committing $600 to tires and rims that may in the long run cut my performance capabilities.

Opps! Hey, maybe I've got a name for a new company. I'll post it on e-bay and see if anyone wants to buy it! :-)
