I have a '94 D1 with 96k miles. After about 20 minutes running I start to see the temperature rising. It spikes more quickly with the ac on or at sustained speeds (freeway). I have recently changed the water pump, thermostat and coolant and I've tried burping the system several different ways. The ac and temp switch for the aux fans seem to work ok, so I'm thinking viscous coupling or radiator. Any ideas on how to test each separately? Thanks again, Blake |

Blake: Save yourself lots of angst and the BBS the bandwidth. Replace your radiator. At the age and number of miles your truck has, it is time for a new radiator. You can ignore it (like I did). You can try to have it recored (like I did, but the price to recore was $7 more than a new one from Atlantic British) Or, you can buy a new one like I did and drive carefree for the next 90K miles. Peace, Paul |

Thanks Paul, I figure it's due sooner or later but I'm a cheap b*****d. I don't mind replacing/upgrading a failed part, but the PM list for the truck would break me. I was told the coupling should be stiff at temp and mine's basically freewheeling. Knowing my truck, it'll need both before too long. What was your cheapest source for the radiator? |

I had mine recored for under $300 after that it was perfect. If the viscous coupling/drive was bad I think they lock and you always hear the roar. If there good on start up you'll hear a roar from the fan then it will go away. Plus the time it took to recore vs. ordering a new one was better for me got it next day. Ordering a new one would have taken over a week to get. |

Forget the manual fan...run two electric fans & save the horsepower. Bought mine for my RRC at summitracing.com. You can buy a temp switch & fine tune the fans (or one) to kick on at a certain temp. I have mine set at 175 degrees. Was a pretty easy swap on the RRC...may be a little more difficult on the disco. Also you can turn the fans off when going through water crossings. JB |

i have 95 disco and have been noticing some time to get to normal running temp. i was attributing it to cold weather here in the morning. how long does it "usually" take to get to running temp? |

Joseph, Did you just replace the two front fans with larger ones or add two to the backside where the cooling fan was? |

Blake I left the factory electric fan in place. I removed the manual fan and put in an electric. I believe the name of the fan that I bought was "black magic." I did this to my old Jeep Cherokee & my RRC a few years back. If you look on Cherokee sights this is a VERY common mod because the cooling problems with older Jeeps (89-93). If my memory serves me, you can basically unbolt the fan from the clutch. I have to go take a look. joe |

P.S. I agree w/Paul: replace your radiator. As a last resort you may try & reverse flush the radiator to push out the crap that is lodged in there. Once again I do this every winter to the heater core in my old Cherokee & the heat basically goes from room-temp to hot. You should see all the crud that comes out. This is a last resort I would assume, but it may buy you some time. joe |

Thanks again. I'm getting ready for a road trip and have to have it sorted. I ordered the viscous coupling from Discount Rovers before I saw your first post. I'm not sure about returning it. What did the fan setup run? |
