I bought my '96 disco two and a half years ago used. I have had a vibration problem at highway speeds from day 1. The vibration would set off the check engine light. The car was under warranty when I bought it and first had it checked out, but the dealership claimed it was a driveline problem. The problem is still occuring, only a lot worse, and now, after trying everything else, I find out that this is a sticking valve. It is my understanding that this is a design problem with the valve guides being too tight. My truck is now out of warranty. Has anyone had any luck getting LR to pay for this due to their bad design? Anyone know if I have a foot to stand on with the dealership due to their misdiagnosis? These dealerships are truly pitiful. I have NEVER had a successful repair or part sale from them in almost three years. They always screw something up.

Does it idle roughly? Have you tried using differant oils or over-the-counter engine drugs like "Gunk Valve Medic Valve Treatment"? I normally wouldn't suggest it to people but your problems sound severe enough to try anything.

What if the newer version valve guides were installed...RPI describes them as the oil impregnated guides used in the Range Rover 4.6 HSE?

I do have the valve tick but my vibration was due to components that went bad in my transfer case...I've since replaced it and no more vibrations. I'm wanting to rebuild my top-end after I get all the 4x4 mods done (if that is even possible).

When I changed my oil saturday I left the filter on and drained the existing Mobil 1 and replaced it with about 3-4 quarts of a cheap heavy weight oil and 1 quart of diesel. I let it idle for 5 minutes then drained it and the oil looked like the Mobil I I had just drained with over 5k miles on it. I then filled it with Mobil I and she now idles and runs perfectly.

I have tried seafoam through the intake, in the gas, in the oil, pouring it into the cylinder and then turning it over without fire, water in the intake.....
I just don't seem to have any luck with this stuff. It is too bad there isn't something that just dissolves the carbon. I am going to try to flush the engine to see if that helps, but it is getting to be too annoying to even drive.

My 99 D1 is in for service today with the Check Engine light, which has been going on and off for a month now. They have fixed a few other things, but that has not worked. Today they found that the valves were sticking, and I'm 1 day before my warrenty runs out. So they are going to fix it for me free of charge. Don't know if you have a case or not, but it can't hurt to chew some LR dealers out.

Make sure they give you the new valves Zak.

Our DII had a problem with the valves sticking (this was recently with about 13K miles). Took it in an they ended up putting a new head in with, I believe deeper valve guides. They then discovered that I had two cylinders that were about .006 out, so we ended up with a new short block. All this was under warranty, but the bottom line is that LR supposedly knows there is a problem and you may be able to get this fixed.

"deeper valve guides" - LOL - I certainly hope not - the freakin' guides are already twice the length they need to be!

Part of the problem is the guide length - there is alot of surface area for carbon to build up on and restrict valve stem movement. Shortened guides will have less surface area for this to happen.

As far as enlarged guides goes - that just leaves more room for carbon to build up on and also will make the valve stem seals do more then they were designed to.

Joshua - have you tried the marine engine treatment as described along time ago here (now in archives I assume) - sounds promising to me. (haven't tried it myself)

The sticking valve problem is designed into the motor. If it's far out of warranty I doubt very much if LR will do anything, though.

Be sure you install the latest carbon cut valves and modify the guides to reduce the chance of failure in the future.

We do these jobs all the time - very common. But they seem to stay fixed using these new parts.

Hate to tell you that this is a very common problem. I have a 1998 that had the sticking valve problem last year. Last year passing somone on a two lane my engine sounded like it was missing. Took it the LR tech who knew what the problem was before a compression test was done. When the head was taken off I had four bent exhaust valves.
