Land Rover gear boxes have a history, espicially yours which is probably either an LT-77s or an R-380 of having there 2nd gear synchro mesh waring out. I would bet dollars to donuts your synchros are worn, it would seem to be worse in cold weather. Putting synthetic oil or new gearbox oil in there would probably just mask the problem. Its rather normal on all rover gearboxes as far as I know. |

Its an R380, sounds like the syncro is worn. Synthetics should help some. but long term be prepared for a rebuild to replace the worn syncro. The diff lock was probably not used and the linkage needs lubricating having rusted together.

Hi Paul I would suggest you get yourself down to WHSmiths and buy a LR magazine and scour the adverts, or do a web search for breakers, if your taking the box out, alone this will probably cost about 500, I would suggest doing it yourself, but this is a really heavy item, and although not particulaly difficult, you will detest doing this on your driveway, is this your daily driver? There are plentiful gearboxes in the breakers. Best of luck Pete S |
