I went to install my $G diff guards this past Saturday. The rear guard went on okay. I had to lift up on the rear bumper for the guard to slide between the gas tank and the pumpkin. As for the front, I'm guessing that I need to remove the steering/tie rod that runs in front on the pumpkin? I didn't have the ness tools as I was at a friends house. I've also heard that the rears needed to be welded on. Any truth? If not, is there such a thing as too tight for bolting on? Any hints or tips?
Thanks all.

Yes, you need to remove/loosen that rod in order to get the front one on. I did have both of mine welded on.

I slipped my D1 SG front diff guard on without disassembling anything.

1) lay under Disco

2) firmly grasp diff guard

3) make it happen

Jack,

On the front you will have to remove one side of the panhard rod to get the diff guard to go on. It's pretty simple to do. I didn't see any other way around it, and I called SG just to make sure.

Blue, I hope that your set is not defective! I guess I'll be under the truck this weekend. I just didn't have the tools with me. Blue keep trying to upload. Trust me, I tried every puzzling way of putting it on. Thanks!

It's magic Blue. There is no room to slide or fit it to my truck w/o removing the rod. Thanks again

I will try again with my BFM. I used lard, lube, grease, hammers, mallets, and the FORCE but nothing works. I will fix it tomorrow along with the oil cooler lines.

Well before you beat the shit to death with the BFM just undo the left (passenger side bolt) and slide the panhard rod up and the diff guard on. I did the whole job in under 10 minutes with my currently very limited tools.

Just get a breaker bar and use a highlift handle (thanks for reminding me I had that 'tool' Will) as a cheater bar, it will be off with a minimum amount of effort.

Dumb question? Is there a front and rear difference in guards? I've developed a "noise" when I go over speed bumps. I think that the gas tank maaaaay be rubbing the guard on the rear when the truck comes down on the springs after the bump. I did not have this before and I find it hard to believe that something is out of place suspension wise since I've not been off road.

Why havent you been off road Jack? Maybe that's the problem. Your truck is trying to tell you something. She wants MUD damnit, MUD!

Due to work and other events. I understand. I'm about to go play as we speak. I called $G and they verified front and rears.
Thanks.

Without welding, is it possible to over-tighten them?

Jack,

For the rear guard, no matter how much you tighten it - you WILL knock it off at some point. If you don't plan to weld it - then make sure to make a tether for it (nylon covered braided steel wire works well). You'll still knock it off, but at least won't lose it then. You'd be better off just welding it now.

Bill
