I did a search on this subject and nothing came up. I find it hard to believe that nobody has discussed window tinting. Anyway, it's going to be getting real hot here in Texas very soon and before I do anything else I'm going to have the windows tinted. I'm not going to do this myself - going to hire it out to a professional shop. My questions are.....

Has anybody had any bad luck with a particular brand of tinting film? Is it all about the same? Should I request a certain brand? If so, what brand of film would you recommend? I don't think I'm any different than anybody else when I say I totally despise the bubbling that seems to come up after a year or so. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I got my 98 disco tinted recently and just follow these steps: Get a darker tint than you think you need, because the windows are so upright that more sun gets in than normal cars-
Make sure you get the alpines tinted and maybe even the sunroofs. If you dont get the alpines, alot of light gets in and it just looks funny. I didnt do the sunroofs but i wish i had. Lastly, always use ammonium-free window cleanser. The tints will cool you down, save your leather, and keep people from looking in.

I had my 97 tinted about 3 months ago. It was prolly the best money spent. I think it ended up being about $25 per window. I had them all done except for the passenger and driver side windows. I forget what kind it was. I just took it to a pro window tinting place here in Portland. They used a titanium film. (Which I guess is stronger in preventing scratches and tears) It doesnt look purple or blue..... and they guaranteed to it to never bubble or peel. Get them all done. You will be happy.

Kelly,
recently took my DI to a stereo place, had my speakers and subs put in, and heard they were great with tint. Ended up getting limo tint in the four back side windows, alpines and rear door, and got 25% on the driver and passenger windows. Not sure what film they used, whatever was reccomended on that type of vehicle. It's almost impossible to see in through the rear even with hands cupped against glass. My Disco definately stays a hell of a lot cooler. Make sure you get your sunroofs tinted and also the 6 inch or whatever limit on the windshield tinted.

if you do it yourself, be carefull which tint you select.

First the basics, the rating for the tint is in percentage, the lower the percentage number, the less light is transmitted through the window. "limo" tint will usually run around 9%-4%. Darker tint will distort your night time view of things.

Windows come from the factory with some tint already in the glass. Stock window tint for the front can range from 7% to 12%.

If you add 16% window tint, you end up with a final tint level of around 9% which would be illegle for the front windows in most states.

Also, high nickle content tint will add higher reflectivity, resulting in a mirror tint. Not very appreciated by people having to drive around you sometimes.

Bottom line, check your state statutes before putting tint on to be sure you are in compliance.
