I'm getting sick of looking at the stock 5-star rims for my Discovery, plus they are hard as hell to maintain clean. Interested in getting some bullet hole rims or something that looks good. Can't decide whether i want chrome or stainless steel. Any advice where to get some off website or magazine. Please don't advise google b/c i'm sick of looking on that shit for smart asses that reccomend it. I want a good look at some wheels and dont feel like looking at the same shit. Any help would be reccomended, also pictures of disco's with different wheels.

Garrett,

Sounds like you are already mad at the responses and you havn't gotten any yet.

What are you trying to accomplish with the rims?

Well,

Besides the LR Wheels you'd see at Atlantic British and similar, Gulf Coast Rovers and $G both carry the same offroad wheels, and they are very nice.

I'm sure several here are running them and perhaps they will be kind enough to point you to a picture. I think I am going to mount a set from GCR on my truck to get them off the Alloys as well.

Garrett - go to Matt Lee's website (MJ Lee) - he has steel, and two styles of polished aluminum - of course you'd have to pay freight from the UK

Hey Perrone, I just figured I would give you fair warning with those GCR wheels. I know you are running some big meats and the new offset is going to cause them to stick out even more, so if you are anywhere close to rubbing right now you will probablly be there when you get the new wheels. Trust me, I had a bitch of a time just fitting 235/85-16s on a 2 inch rte lift. Judging from the pics of your truck if I were you I would be sticking with the stock offset.

IMHO, FWIW, blah blah blah

There are plenty of Disco steelies available at junkyards. I found a yard in Ohio that had 4. 220 bucks shipped and no tax. A little sanding, primer, and flat black rustoleum and they are as good as new.

Carter,

Thanks for the warning. I'm aware of the issues. Right now, my tires don't rub at all on the bodywork, just the inside of the wheel well. I fully expect to have to trim once I get the new rims. I had bought the tool to trim expecting trouble that didn't come.

But I want to get my turning radius back and this is the most effective way to do it.

Good deal Perrone, I just didn't want you to be as suprised as I was. I finally got all my issues worked out but it was a royal pain in the ass. Your lucky those RRCs have larger wheel wells, I'm scared to think what my disco would look like if I tried to fit those tires :-)

I am definately not looking for black rims. I want a look of some polished stainless steel or something of that sort. I dont think chrome would suit my disco, so i want something that are easily cleaned, and rust free. I've got about the only "Rover Rig" in my county that i've seen. Others have stock with black rims and tires and i dont want to copy anyone else. Any websites to find some bullet holes or something else of that sort?

try looking at the genuine spare wheels, they are unpainted steel and very good wheels according to some people around here.

Carter,
Thats the advise i was looking for. Thanks a lot. Any other suggestions on places to look for them would be much appreciated. I posted another thread about headlights just a second ago. Curious if you have any comments or suggestions on that.

Electroless nickel plated Wolf wheels. They'll never rust.

Someone talked of chrome plating the sport alloys, but never looked into it. Is there a website i can go to to find a shop in my area? what is nickel plating?

Chrome, nickel and electroless nickel plating are all different animals.

Chrome plating is shit if you use your truck offroad. And I believe unless your wheels are copper, you wont be able to nickel plate. Now ELECTROLESS nickel plating is a viable solution for practical use and excellent corrosion, abrasion, and wear resistance.

I had a friend plate my d-rings and a high-lift jack. Its great stuff. No rust.

I've seen galvanized hi-lifts. Very cool indeed. But for wheels it would be a bitch balancing tires afterwards as galvanizing isn't a uniform coating like electroless nickel. The electroless bath provides a deposit that follows all contours of the substrate exactly, without building up at the edges and corners. I think you can get different colors of plating nowadays too.

DAP-inc.com use to have some polished alloy wheels but I dont see them on their site anymore. Might want to give them a call and see whats up. All they have now is steel wheels and some Range Rover wheels.

Neil,

No, it's not bad.... wheels aren't "perfectly balanced" anyway, the galvanizing isn't THAT thick; I've seem 'em, and not heard of any problems with it.

And, it'd be very Roverish. :-)

I am looking for a clean look. My truck is definately set up for 4x4, rack, hellas, brush bar, winch, tires but I want something that is durable but very clean looking. I wouldn't mind having the rims i have now recoated, but i can't find anyone in my area that does such a thing. Any body live near N.C.?

After thinking about being the only kid on the block with shiny Disco steelies, I made a few calls.

Electroless nickel would be a great solution, however its expensive and difficult to find a shop with a big enough hopper to fit one rim let alone four.

Zinc phosphate dip would also be a good choice for corsion resistance. It's cheaper than electroless, but would register low on the Bling-meter.

And yes you are correct Leslie. Galvanizing is not as thick as I had thought. A thickness of .020 would be sufficient to provide sufficient corrosion resistance(compared to .001 of electroless nickel) would do the trick.

I don't know whet the composition of the Rover alloys is so I dont know if this could be done to them.

I don't live there, but Google lives everywhere, this search took me 11 seconds:

I agree with the electroless nickel plating, I use it all the time on my parts at work, plating extremely corrosive Invar for use in saline environments and it works well and is very tough. You will have to polish it nicely beforehand because scratches will show through, and remove any burrs because those are weak points for any plating process and corrosion usually starts at a sharp edge.

Here's our AFM lapped & polished, then electroless nickel "flashed" (thinner coating than standard plating) uber-bling dude:

image

Shops usually charge a lot charge regardless of quantity if their tanks are big enough to fit all four or five rims in at once, call them and see if you can go in on an already existing run since you have limited funds and they might cut you a deal. I throw personal items in with company items all the time and it doesn't change my rate, which is usually about $250 a batch, consisting of anywhere from 20-250 parts.

PS does this make up for my joking around on your other post? IS ALL FORGIVEN???
