1994 Disco 3.9L 133k mls. W/ Top End Ticking Noise!

After several visits to the Mech., and about $1,500 later and days of down time, no one have yet been able to give me a true diagnostics or fix the problem.
I have research the message archives on this topic and found some very interesting conversation, but none the actually pinpoint my problem.
I have a problem with a ticking noise (top end), come and go sometime weeks in between. Unlike pass message I seen posted, my ticking accrue not a start up, but only after the motor has warm up (15min or so). At startup I receive no oil pressure light indications, the motor idles fine, when driving I have strong power, there no back fire, or smoke, no ruff motor rattle etc. I able to eliminate the noise at weeks at a time by adding a bottle of “Valve Medic”, this will give me days of relief (or weeks).
I hope someone out there can point me in the right directions!

Anthony:
I seem to remember there having been a problem with the seat where the pushrod mates to the rocker arm, something about heat treating. If this is indeed the case, the replacement of the rocker arm/shaft assembly is indicated. Supposedly, these assemblies can be bought from the dealer as a warranty replacement item for the princely sum of $55.00/each, although I have not personally confirmed the veracity of this statement.

On the other hand, it doesn't sound as though this is something that is adversely affecting operation...

Peace,
Paul

That’s correct Paul, the motor seems to operate well, (as mention good idling, no warning lights indications, very strong power etc.) but the ticking is driving up the wall!
Over the last weeks I had the repairs listed below but still have the ticking:
-Motor flushed w/pressure pump
-New gaskets, top in bottom (drop the pan and clean, scrape out)
-New exhaust (thru Cat.)
-New valves (I know he should have chg. The cam!)
-Running Mobil 1, w/ a oil stabilize
What to do next !

The mach. wants to pull motor and bore!

Anthony:
With those many miles, you do need a cam, but it will run a long time with the one you have. If you've not noticed a marked decrease in performance, it isn't affecting you badly-yet.

The replacement of the rocker shaft assemblies is fairly straightforward and given the recent disassembly, it should go fairly quickly, maybe five-six hours if you're handy. By all means, do it yourself. Also, if in fact they can be pruchased for the $55 price, it could be money well spent given the things you've already ruled out, but keep in mind that to a great extent, your actions are only being taken to resolve a personal annoyance and most likely, not something that will lead to the immediate demise of the engine. Argh-another run-on sentence...

I often see rocker assemblies on ebay for <$100.

Peace,
Paul

Anthony,
If you plan to do this yourself, you may be able to isolate the bad rocker and just replace it and the pushrod without installing a complete new assembly. I recently cured my ticking, same description you provided. Also, if your are goingto replace the culprit rocker/pr, take time to disassemble and clean-up the rest of the assembly.
BTW, I think Nathan can get a complete assembly for under $80. Ask him.
Good Luck
Bruce

If you change the Cam you must change the followers too since these are worn to the shape of the last cam.
The engine will run with ticking cams etc etc for a long time.
