I think my saga is reaching an end. My truck has not started since Monday night. It is not turning over at all. Checked battery-good, fuel pump-good. Replaced dist/rotorarm/battery cables +&-/spark plugs. I am afraid it is the starter. Any ideas on where to get one (Disc Rovers/Rovers North)??? Is there a less expensive alternative to the genuine part? Anyone ever replaced it themselves? How difficult would it be to replace for me a very unskilled mechanic? Any ideas on what the dealer or indy shops charge? Thank you very much for your assistance. jp

I had a no crank problem that was due to a loose connection at the starter solenoid where the ignition wire connects (this is the small gage wire). On mine ('94 D1) this was a slip on connection and the connector on the end of the wire had to be squeezed together to make it fit better. This is a difficult wire to see as it is on the top of the starter and hides under the exhaust manifold. Until I properly fixed it, I would reach under the manifold and wiggle the wire a little and then it would start.
I removed the starter to fix mine because at the time I didn't know how the wire was attached and I also wanted to correct a problem with the starter not disengaging as soon as it should when the key was released. I found it to be quite difficult to remove because the bolts are very difficult to get to (lots of extensions and a universal) and extremely tight. Also, after breaking them loose they still came out very hard do to the sealant that was on the threads.

John,

Before you go spending a few hundred $ on a new starter, replace the battery cables. If I remember correctly you said that the positive cable was frayed. This is going to cost about $10-$15. Even if the starter needs replacing, this should be done anyways.

I haven't had to mess with my starter yet. But just pull it out and bench test it. You can do it yourself or just take it to advance autoparts. It cant be that hard to get off. But I havent looked.

But Before that just check like Mike and John said. Get a meter make sure its even getting voltage to the unit.

Another alternative is to have it rebuilt...Make sure the rebuilder is reputable. I had mine rebuilt for $130 at StartMart and it came with a lifetime warranty. You may want to get a AAA membership to get the free tow to the shop...

I did replace both battery cables and same reslut-no start....
I will check the wire on the top of the starter, this may be my problem. Question...Can you reach the solenoid wire without disassembling everything???? It was difficult enough getting to the battery cable..... Thanks.. JP
