My 96 has been ticking away for quite some time now and also emits a foul odor from the engine comparment when the windows are down. I suspected an exhaust leak at the collector on the passenger's side and had the connection tightened once already. I still think it is leaking. Is there a gasket at the collector or should a guy use a little "Form a Gasket"?

yes there is a gasket. very cheap fix if this is where your leak is. may as well do both sides while you are down there.
check your manifolds too. they are prone to cracking or leaking gaskets.

I'm hoping that's where it is. Thanks for your input - I'll be checking those out this weekend instead of hiding easter eggs. The Rover ruins another family holiday! I'm sure they'll understand.

just hide some eggs under the truck. a good excuse for being under there then.
i have replaced all those gaskets and i have 85K on my truck. the collectors went with about 50K on the truck. they get REALLY loud.

I have seen a number of Rovers that develop cracks in the downpipe/y-pipe where the flange is welded to the pipe

my 1996 also has a LOUD engine knock and emits an odor and is just all around loud. Is the engine knock related to the leak? Today i put an additive in to clean the lifters. Any help would be appreciated
