First I did search the archives, but since I am working away from home for two weeks, I find it hard to search just about anything at the 26k connection I get at the hotel. I found a '97 XD with 61k miles on it at a used car dealer yesterday (I have always loved the look of the land rover) so I stopped to look at it. I did not see any obvious major issues, but these are the things I did find and would like another opinion. 1. Driver door lock makes a chattering sound when locking (kind of like the relay keeps going for about 3 seconds) 2. Rear window wiper does not work. 3. When I first started it, you could hear a mechanical tick under the hood, so on a closer look, I found nothing major, but the pulley tensioner was bouncing a little. But every thing seemed to work well. The dealer has a starting price around $12,500 on the Disco. Any thoughts, or should I keep looking. I keep telling my wife that I will buy one soon, she doesn't like the idea of (as she puts it) poor fuel economy and maintenance issues. I don't care I love the looks of a Disco and will buy one when the right one comes along. I have done research in the past on the Disco, but that was on a new one and she has put her foot down about me buying a new vehicle of any kind. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated. I do have the Name and # of the previous owner and plan to call him today and ask some questions, any thing I should ask other than about carbon issues and warranty work that has been done? And yes I did look at http://www.robisonservice.com/servicedep/rover_advice1.asp#disco and he says to avoid the 96 and 97 model years, so any thoughts on this would be of great help. Thanks in advance, Joey Spencer WV

Joey, Look over the exhaust manifolds, they love to crack. Look for rust around all of the doors, I bet you find some. Point this out to the dealer! Make certain you can engage the 4 wheel drive, test it on a gravel road. When you speak to the previous owner, find out where they had it serviced. If it was at a LR dealership, call them for the service history. I would not give someone over $10k for a stock XD. John www.teampb.com

Thanks, just spoke to the LR service manager in Charleston WV. He gave me some interesting news. As per the 60k check up, the following actions were needed and not done. 1. Cracked exhaust manafold. 2. Head gaskets (valve job) 3. Possible rear main seal As per the service manager this would cost if I had them do it which I would not. $4800.00 of course this would include the new black valves. I still plan to call the previous owner, but wondering if it would be worth it for this vehicle. Thanks for the info so far. |

Get the car-dealer to have it done beforehand at the Rover dealership, plus anything else it needs, and then offer ~$10k for it. IMHO.... -L

Geez...I guess I got ripped off. I paid $16K for my 97XD with 63K miles. I bought it from the original owner who had it garaged and serviced at the local dealer according to the maintenance book. It was in just about mint condition with no problems, so I figured it was worth it, and at the time did not see any other deals out there on 97 D1's that made me think it wasn't. It had never been offroad and was used as a mall mobile. Was it really not worth $16K all things considered?

I gave $8k for our '95 D1 1/2 year ago; just passed another '95 for sale, asking $6700... a 1/2 year before that, they would have been a lot higher.... Disco prices recently have been hit hard, lots of 'em are coming up for sale in an already-full market. IMHO, an XD isn't worth "extra", it just has the yellow paint on it, if that's what you want. If you like your truck, don't worry about the price.... -L
