Hi.
Is there any problem with mounting a hi-lift jack on a bull bar instead of carrying it in the cargo area or mounted on a roof rack or the tire carrier?
Would there be extra weight or stress conditions on the bumper, steering, springs, shocks doing this? Would it block the lights at nite or visibility over the bonnet?
Any pix?
This would be for a Disco 03.
Thanks

Do a search of the board for Hi-lifts threads.

You need to keep the jack head as clean and rust free otherwise at best it won't work and at worst you'll get hurt using it. Even when covered , at speed moisture and dirt will get in there. Keep it mounted inside the truck.

I'm beating a dead horse here..... however a Hi-Lift style jacks must be treated like loaded guns !

I've had mine on the front of my truck for months now without any problem, and that includes some heavy off-roading.

I keep my jacking mechanisim in the rear, just in case someone takes a liking to my jack while it's parked somewhere.

I have mine mounted on the front ARB bumper. I used the top light tabs. I put bolts up through and tightened, then I used nyloc nuts to space the jack up, then I use wing nuts to hold the jack. I use a cable with padlock to ensure it doesn't mysteriously dissappear.

Lots of Folks do the same thing that John does and it seems to work fine. If I am not mistaken, you will have to remove it in order to open your hood.

Already too much weight on the front...relocate Hi-Lift to somewhere lower and to the rear (accross the rear seats inside - remains clean and thief-proof)

Paul, I have mine mounted as John describes and can slide my hand under it to open the hood. If this not being able to open the hood w/ it on is a common problem let me know and I will take some pics of my mounts.

Carter don't get distracted taking pics of the GF for that "other" website while you're at it! LOL

I think Evan is saying just what Mike Cox is saying, mount the rail, keep the head inside and you will be fine. Me, I keep mine in the garage because I am always forgetting it.....it's perfectly clean! LOL

Ok here it goes.

I have no problems getting the hood open with it mounted like this, just slide your hand under the jack and push the latch aside. Notice the rubber strap used to secure the handle so it doesn't knock around and the cable locking it to the bumper. All of the materials are available in the hardware section of Lowes/Home Depot and more than likely your neighborhood hardware store (just not sure about the spacers, never looked for them anywhere else).

1

Here is a close up of one of the 'mounts' there are two fender washers on either side of the antena tab and a bolt that runs up through them (all this hardware is 1/2"). The metal spacer is 2" long (I do not remember the diameter).

2

Here is a view of the top there is a 1/2" washer and wing-nut holding the jack on

3

To hold the bolts in place with the jack off I put a bunch of JB weld down inside the spacer then put the jack on, tightened the wing-nuts and let it sit for a day. This was a quick solution since I didn't have a welder on hand, the original plan was to go back and tack the pieces together but now I think I will just stick w/ the JB weld because it is holding fine and will be much simpler to dismantle if I ever want to remove the mounts.

4

This mounting system enables you to open the hood just fine but it does not let you mount the jack with the base plate attached. I got this pin at Lowes, it makes attaching and removing the base much easier than with the stock cotter pin.

The other option for attachment thru the light tabs is to use a long Wheel Stud instead of a bolt, with a locking lug nut at the end to help prevent your Jack from Disappearing.

Why not try this, use the long bolt as you have done, but on top of the fender washer, put a nut on to hold the bolt in place on the bullbar, then your spacer, then the rest as you have done.

I just made pin at work (I love being a machinist), that is 3/4 in diameter with 1/2 threads on each end, one to go through the bullbar, the other through the jack. On the top I secured everything with a nut instead of a wing nut. I'll post a pic when I get the chance.

yeah I could do that but the bolts I used aren't threaded all the way down, not sure if a 1/2 bolt would fit inside a spacer small enough to fit in the 'groove' of the highlift bar but if it did that would be a good solution.

Any suggestions as to how to keep the Hi-Lift from rusting? It seems to me that after you use it once, the pins wear off the paint in the slots, and then rust would appear.

BTW I made my thread 1/2" they were a bit tight, so I used a file to slot the hole in the bullbar, and everything works fine (I then painted the inside of the new slot to keep it from rusting).
