My Jeep was totaled and I'm def. getting a Disco, probably a '96 and I want a black one. Just wanted to see some pics of a 96 or 97 tinted out black Disco to see how it looks... Adam |

The location is in Weber City, which is just north of Kingsport TN..... Looked clean enough.... but i haven't driven it or -really- looked at it, just spotted it in the parking lot. Price on Discos has been dropping... a year ago, a '95 would have been ~$9k, now, ~$7k is reasonable. Could be high-miles, but, these things can take mileage... From Knoxville, come out I-40, go north on I-81 to I-181. From Greenville, come up I-26 to Asheville, up US-23 to the state line w/ TN, where it becomes I-181. On I-181, drive north all the way into VA, where you are back on US-23. About a mile north of the state line, first red light you come to, it's sitting in the shopping center on your right, across from the large cemetery. If you want, I'll stop and jot down the phone number on my way home this evening.... -L

There are some differences between '95 and '96... '94-'95 are 3.9-liter OBD-I trucks, whereas '96-on is the 4.0 OBD-II.... OBD-I has a distributor, whereas the OBD-II ones are distributorless. That's the significant difference. Externally, if you look at the taillights of a '96-on, you'll see that the orange turnsignals are located both in the bumper and in the rear taillight assembly on the body. The '94-'95 Discos only have the turnsignals in the bumper: there's no orange on the lamp assembly on the body. Look at the door-locks; later Discos have rounded door-lock buttons, where the earlier ones have square buttons (this change may have been after '96, though). Usually earlier US Discos have castor alloy wheels (as did this one), where later Discos used tornado or deep-dish wheels. That's the biggies that come to mind..... I'll post the number later tonight.... -L

Adam, 2 things: 1) It wasn't there when I came back through yesterday evening: my guess is that they took it home for the weekend, and it'll (hopefully) be back on Monday. 2) I've recently heard a story..... there was a girl whose parents bought her a black Disco in the area, and that night she took it out with her buddies "off-roading" and hydrolocked the engine in a mudhole. I don't "think" that this is the same vehicle, but, I want to investigate a bit more beforehand..... I'll let ya know if I learn anything more.... -L

I have a Black 99 D1 with the smoked glass. It is great to have tinted windows here in Birmingham during the summer. But I have to warn you. A Black Disco is a beautiful thing but it is a bitch to keep it clean and every scratch and chip show. Which most Disco webbers see pinstriping as "character", and I agree. They usually have good stories to go along with the "character". But when you get chips in the paint for general road debris it really sucks. Just my $0.02. |

Hey Brad, your D1 looks good, you'll like UT next year. Dean, your is exactly what I am looking for. That thing is sweet. Can you, or anyone, clear something up though...I thought that '99+ Discos were ALL D2's but obviously not, what is the diff. b/w a D1 and D2? Michael, trust me, I know what you mean about black cars. Here is a pic of my lifted Jeep ZJ that was totaled two weeks ago; allll black, it was my baby!!: http://web.utk.edu/~efreeze/adamszjsmaller.jpg

Adam, '99 was a transition year.... essentially, the last of the '98 Discos that were sold were sold as the '99 SD model (which is what I had). THe DII was introduced in '99. The differences are: the body is about 7" longer on the DII, creating more cargo space; no CDL from the factory; ETC and HDC, ACE and SLS, 18" wheels are available; different door handles, higher rear taillights, differences in the interior, etc. A DII would be newer, more comfortable on the road. A DI is more affordable, easier to modify for off-road use. Bother are capable Land Rovers. FWIW... -L

Thanks for the info, Leslie. So I was reading about the differences b/w all the diff. models, such as LE, SD, SE, etc. but I can't find the page that it was all on and I'd like to check it out again. Can someone give me a brief rundown of the different models or point me to a good source regarding them. Thanks again, Adam |

LOL! I had oodles of typos the other night, that's what I get for typing when wrestling with my 1-year old..... lol.... I've not seen a page that spells out the different models, so if you find it again, I'd like to see it, too.... just to know of for reference purposes... The SD is usually the bottom-end model, though on new ones it's the S model. In '99 alone, the SD was all of the DIs, instead of DIIs.... they had more features on those DIs than other years. LE7, SE7, SD7... if there's a 7 on the end, that means it has the jump-seats in the back. In '98, there was an LSE, which had chrome bumpers instead of the usual black ones. That's the ones that I know about.... Alyssa may be able to more accurately fill in the details here.... -L
