I just had new calipers and pads put on the front of my 93 LWB. Now, when rolling, a rythmic "clacking" comes from the front wheels. When I press on the brakes, the clacking stops.

My mechanic said that I needed some anti-rattle springs (that the brake pads were sliding around), which I got from Motorcars. I went to put them on, and they don't fit. So I start looking through all the brake info that I can find and, on the brakes that look like mine, there don't seem to be any anti-rattle springs.

The hardware (retaining pins and springs) appear to have been reused from the old calipers but don't seem worn.

Any ideas on the cause and how I can stop the clacking?

Springs slide over the pad retainers and fit between each pad backing. You will need thses to stop the pads from rattling.

If you paid to have the work done - I'd take it back and demand all new hardware and springs.

What do you mean by the springs "don't fit" - there isn't really much to them.

There seem to be two different anti-rattle spring systems, one ABS and one non-ABS. I ordered one from Motorcars and was sent the other. I called them and asked why they didn't fit and they couldn't tell me. I've ordered new springs and retaining pins from another source. Hopefully, that's the fix.

Thanks Bill,
Rick

The answer: Aftermarket brake pads: slightly too small.
