I had some odd things occur recently with respect to the alarm and keyless entry on my newly purchased DII (Elmo) and wanted some informational assistance from others who may have experienced the same.

When I bought the truck, I received one electronic key and 2 normal keys (my wife uses the electronic key and is the main driver). I had driven Elmo for the last few days using my non-electronic key and thought nothing of it.

This morning, my wife opens the doors with the electronic key and sets off the alarm after trying to start it up. The kids were already in the car, so she had everyone pile out and close all of the doors. She locked and unlocked the doors with the key (mechanically), loaded them back in, and Elmo started right up. This happened 2 more times today, so she switched cars.

After searching the Tech posts, I have a hunch that by alternating between a non-electronic key and an electronic key this somehow causes the alarm to trigger. I also read about motion sensors in the roof...maybe this has something to do with it?

If I get another electronic key and have it programmed the same will this solve the problem, or am I way off? Could it be a weak battery issue?

Thanks in advance, Brad

Unless someone corrects me, a '00 DII does not have the motion sensors so that would not be the issue.

Correct, Eric. No motion detectors in a 2000, UNLESS they were installed. If you sit in the driver's seat, look over your left shoulder and up. If you see two bug eyes looking at you, you've got the sensors. If there is just a plain plate, no sensors.
One really good possibility is that your wife is hitting the ROUND lock button when she is going to turn the key in the ignition. This is EXTREMELY common. If she inadvertantly hits the button, then continues turning the key, she will set off the alarm. The fact that after she got out, locked, and then unlocked the car & the problem did not repeat really lends this theory credibility.
You need to learn to hold the key differently to prevent the problem in the future.
See if it is this problem. If not, you should still be under warranty, no? Talk to the dealer about it.

Thank you Alyssa! I was a Series guy until 2 weeks ago so all of this is news to me...but great advice nonetheless.

I will fix the problem by using the non-electric keys we already have and switch to a key-chain clicker at a later date.

The warranty is good for awhile but that was my next move...and say hey to Ron for me. Oh yeah, can I get Bill Baker's e-address again? I met him back in the mid 80s when I was institutionalized at Annapolis (not sure if he still lives there these days).

Take care, Brad

I second Alyssa!! not holding the key properly will set the alarm and then the confusion starts!!
