Hi

I am sure my question will not be the first time here but too lazy to perform a search.

With my 1998 disco, automatic transmission when shifting from drive to reverse a deafining sound occurs, quite freigtening actually!

Sometime I can overcome this by shifting to Neutral while the vehicle is still moving (free wheeling)then when fully stopped shifting to reverse. The problem is that not everytime I can free wheel thje vehicle.

I idea how to fix / get rid of this deafining problem.

Thanks

Are you going forward in drive & then quickly shifting into reverse? No wonder it's making a horrible noise. You don't like your transmission, do you?

Alyssa - what I mean is that sometime while the vehicle is still moving forward I have to shift to neutral until it is completely stop. Then shifting reverse will not have any noise.

Say you are maneuvering in a small space and you have to do several short forward drive and several short reverse, then shifting from drive to reverse would cause the noise.

Ynik,

I have the same exact thing in my 1998 with the ZF and I HATE that sound. My 1992 LT77s does not have anything like that, so hearing this was scary...

I can imagine how many gear teeth from that shifter to those 4 wheels are interlocking, but the sound IS certainly scary!

Anyone know how ot cure it?

Nadim - Its bad that we both have this problem however at least I know now that its not my driving causes this.

A friend of mine has Disco II with no problem like this at all.

Hey there, According to the local Dealer in Pittsburgh and a dealer in Cleveland they say that all Disco 1's have excessive backlash. I have a 99 and heard the noise myself. I took it to the local transmission shop and they determined that it was the aforementioned. That is when I called a couple dealers to see if they had encountered the same problem on other vehicles and there answer was YES!!They said it wasn't anything to worry about but if I didn't want to hear the noise anymore that I could buy a new transfer case and both front and rear diiferentials at the tune of $5,000. Forget it. I will live with a little backlash. I hope that helps

Don't you really wish to come to a complete stop before moving from forward to reverse or visa versa?

I would never shift into reverse with any forward momentum in any vehicle, especially an automatic. I guess that is how I learned to drive.

Drive train clunks are pretty normal. Deafing sounds are not. What does this deafening sound, sound like? Do you still have forward motion when you place in reverse?
