What exactly is it and does it really help?
I have heard it mentioned on here before as a cure for bad valves or something.

sea foam is a product that i get from napa, it acts to decarbonize your exaust and devarnish your intake, and send way stinky odors to your neighbors nose! i have used this in a couple of vehicles and am pleased with the results, it seems that the engins have idalled smoother afterwards, i have tried the lr dealer stuff as well, but it did not seem to work as well.

It is supposed to clean the valves and keep them from sticking or whatever, right?

Yes it is a good carbon cleaner. It was originally formulated for small engines. Both as a fuel stabilizer and the same fluid in spray form as a fogger when laying engines up. It dissolves gunk like carb. cleaner, yet doesn't evapoate. When burned in the metal cap, it leaves an oil residue that doesn't burn off. Very good penetrating fluid as well. On the can is directions to pour down carb. or let injected engines suck it up at idle until it kills engine. Let sit 5 minutes. When started it will smoke for quite a while. By taking a few plug wires off, the cylinders that don't fire really wet the exhaust up. If left to soak overnight it cures mine for about 2000 miles. Added to fuel is a fuel system cleaner. Add to oil about 500 miles before oil change. It is supposed to suspend particles in oil to flush better when changed. Sounds like Marvel Mystery Oil, but it's thinner like kerosene. It does keep carbs. on tractors, snow blowers, chain saws and snowmobiles from gunking up when not used for long periods of time. Last year when laying up my snowblower I poped the air cleaner off my pick up and with it idling poured it down the air vent to fill the bowl. Also sprayd down the throat after it was shut off. Forgot about doing it for a few days, and when I drove it next time realized how good it ran. I was expecting to have to rebuild the carb. soon. Cleaned out whatever was in there. Now I do that once a year to keep it running fresh. Never had good results like that with carb cleaner sprayed down carbs. I don't sell it or work for them, just use it alot.

"or let injected engines suck it up at idle until it kills engine."

1. Where will it suck it up from? Where do I pour it?

2. Why will it kill the engine? This sounds bad.

Either the brake booster line on a vehicle with power brakes, any other easily accessable vacuum line will do. It kills engine because this much fluid floods it. (wets the spark plug) a little cranking once it soaks 5 minutes will get it going and burn off all the junk with it. A word of caution here: too much fluid down the intake all at once CAN hydro lock the engine, breaking internals!!! You only "give it a drink" you don't "drown it"! If you don't have any experience with this, you should have a mechanic with you, or someone who knows what they're doing help you the first time.
