I've been thinking of getting a Pivlock swing away spare wheel carrier from the UK, to free up some space inside my '91 Classic. Does anyone have any experience good or bad with it? I've done a google search but can't find any info about people using one on a classic.

I know some guys have made custom carriers for their classic's but the Pivlock appeals because it's relatively cheap, uses the stock bumper and doesn't seem to be too difficult to install.

Thanks,

Flor Collins

I did a search on Pivlock tire carrier on the UK sites and here's what I came up with:

for a close up of the pivlock system:

No, that's a Series/Defender Pivlock and those are not XZLs.

Just a guess, but the RR version has only one mounting point on/near the bumper? The top pivot mount is eliminated due to the lack of a mounting location perhaps? Check out the POR board for some examples of home grown rear tire carriers. They're very easy to build or you can simply buy one made for a Cherokee. This type of rear carrier relies heavily on a strong aftermarket bumper with a little bit of a flat surface for the hinge. I'm using the hinge from Rockstomper.com http://www.rockstomper.com/catalog/pieces/hinge.htm

For another example:

Here're some fabrication plans on a swing away rear tire carrier for a Wrangler:

Another:

So, you get my point!

I'll try and take some pictures of the RRC pivlock. It has two mounting points. The lower sits on a steel plate that mounts to the frame/body mount point. The upper bolts through the pillar to a steel brace supplied. There is also a third locating assembly that bolts to the middle of the tail gate. I guess I should move this thread to the for-sale section! It's very well made and finished and even comes with drill bits for the mounting holes. I fully planned on installing it on my own vehicle. However, after test fitting it, I realized that it sticks out a little to much, and too low down, for anything more than mild off-road use. It's perfect for anyone who wants to make extra room in the back, and doesn't plan on any steep ascents. Email me for more info.

I have a pic of my unfinished rear gear rack that is designed to hold a gas can, hi lift, shovel and a CO2 tank. It could be reconfigured to hold a tire or two gas tanks. But does require a different rear bumper. I have these items available if there is any interest.gear rack
