I do most of my off roading in the winter time through snow, and I am looking to fit new rims for the summer. I have a 98' disco with stock rims and tires and I want something a little larger. What are the largest rims that will fit?

I have read the threads and really found nothing, and have asked several people. They say that the lug pattern is unique to the disco, which makes it very hard to fit larger wheels.

That is correct, the lug pattern is different. If you want off-road tires, you really can't get any larger than 16" if you want a great selection. I don't even think there's an aftermarket rim that's larger than 16 and can fit in a D1.

If you really want to get a larger rim, there's a company in the UK, that makes an adapter for the same bolt pattern on the D2 - then you can fit the 18s that came with the D2 on your D1. Actually, you can even fit the 19s from the new RR. I think Steve Cooper is selling them in the For Sale section. Good luck!

I would stay with the 16" rims. The larger the diameter the more chance their is in bending the rims whem you hit a pot hole or such and be it as it may that these will not be your dedicated off road tires the possibility will arise that you will take them off road so the chance of bending the rims is greater
