Hey...I need some company ASAP. I have a small offroad club and we're planning on running the 2N17X upto Lake Arrowhead on April 26th...but: We also want to pre-run the trail, figure out some new routes and maybe do some trimming (admittedly for the paint-princesses) while on the trail. Can ANYONE join me this Wednesday the 23rd. Ho??? anyone? |

Not in the area or I would go with you but try and keep the 'trimming' to a minimum taken to an extreme thats the kind of stuff that gets places closed down. Speaking of not in the area if you know of anyone with an H2 in the central Arkansas area that wants to go out I will be happy to take them, I have asked two guys with winches, lights and all that mess but they all said they didn't have any interest in offroading them, I was sort of looking forward to it though. |

Most of the trails up there are "sponsored" by different jeep clubs and I don't think they would take kindly to you changing "their" trail in any way. Sometimes they have some real adittude about ownership, but they do a lot to keep the trails open and difficult. Other than pulling fallen trees out of the trail (which I did last week) I'd leave the maintenance to them. |

Ahhh guys....we're not talking about much in the way of trimming, and certainly not altering the trial's terrain! In some areas a wide vehicle picks up some nasty scratches from dead manzonita bushes and other small dead twigs. I'm planning on bringing some hand shears and just pruning away some of the nasty dead-wood that reaches out and makes that horrific "scretching" noise as it drags down the sides of your paint (before breaking off on it's own). I'm not touching the terrain under tires and only giving a slight haircut to some of the branches...mostly stuff that is dead and about 1/4" in diameter. I appreciate your concern for the trail, but it's like this....either the pruning shears will trim them off, of the passing vehicles and their paint will. What I plan to trim will be virtually unoticable. Promise! Most of the pre-run is to make sure there are no surprises along the way and to map out a smooth flow while traveling. |

buy a smaller truck. http://www.treadlightly.org/ it's going to scratch your truck, but most likely it will bend and remain, not break. I just had some branches seriously whack my hellas up there, but that's why I bought tough one's. The vast majority of branches were intact after I passed by. If you want paint protection, stick to the fire roads.

2N17X has been adopted by Victor Valley Four Wheelers. See http://www.mscomm.com/~emwick/vv4w04.html. I've been looking around the Web for photos of this route, and everything I've seen shows it pretty open. The challenge will be ruts, not brush! |

We ran the 2N17X in January....it's really quite nice and open...but there are a few areas where some dead manzanita (sp?) branches reach out and extend a bit into the trail. Thanks for the info tip!

Neil, Damn....I just checked this thread and it's now 12:35 (technically wednesday morning). I'm going to head out around 6:30am. It would be AWESOME if you could make it. Take the 10 freeway way way eastward until you hit the 15 freeway...take the 15 fwy north and exit on the 138 (Silverwood exit). When you get off the freeway just turn right (towards East)....you'll see a closed restaraunt named "Tiffany's"....we'll be meeting there. It's just me and Peter...so a 3rd rig would be great. I'm in Woodland Hills and found that it only took me about 1 hour and 15 minutes to make it to the meeting place. Hope you catch this on time. Give me a shout if you can make it: home (818) 348-1460 and tomorrow I'll have the cell on around 6:30am at that number is (818) 497-6240. Call me and we could perhaps wait for you!!!! It's a beautiful trail and conditions should be perfect! |

Btw....we've been "cleared" by the Forest Service to be allowed to remove any dead growth and limbs, branches and twigs extending into and onto the path of the trail. Always good to play by the rules! |

Wow...what a blast: the trail was absolutely beautiful and the forest is in Spring bloom. Neil...you missed out on a great time buddy! If anyone wants to join us on April 26th (this coming Saturday)....please give me a shout! Here are some pics....course, this is the same stuff that Carter's driveway looks like and his grandmother could drive her old MG through any of this stuff.....but submitted for your entertainment...I bring you this:

Even though pics rarely show steepness....there is absolutely no denying that hill is nass-teee! Steep, loose surfaces, steep rock faces...I had to push a lot of buttons to get up this thing. Here's a cute tree stumper....falls under the category of "silly Hummer tricks"

The trick to that last pic as to pull up next to the stump (NOT directly straight upto it) and then turn your wheel/tire about 25-32 degrees into the stump.....that way your bumper is out of the way....then you slowly climb up and pray your tooth-pick tie-rod doesn't get a 'tude on ya! Here's another cute one. This log was way bigger then it looked. I used the same technique to lob-up onto this 26" log. Btw....front right AND rear left tires are BOTH in the air: you gotta love the rear locker and a functional working working working traction control system. |

Okay...my apologies: error on my part. This picture is when I pulled up to fully get my front wheel on top of the log. The picture just before this I was not quite on top...and the front right tire was hanging down and caused the back left tire to hang in the air (creating a 2-tires in the air effect) When I pulled forward (to get higher up) the front tire pulled up and the back left settled back down...but still...this is more then 95% of what most H2 owners would conceive doing? |

I want to also add that I had just received in the mail yesterday a packet from the DiscoWeb with my two official "DiscoWeb" stickers!!! While I have not yet affixed them to my rig...I still felt the presence and comradary of this forum in both spirit and arua within me....course, that was probably just gas from lunch!!! |
