I "discovered" a pristine 97 XD with 27K miles, appears to have never seen dirt at all and it may be up for sale. What would all of you consider a fair price to offer for this machine?

And were there any issues with the XD that I should be aware of?

4.0 DIs all suffer from valve-issues, not just the XDs. With 27k, may not have shown up yet, but probably will eventually.

No problems specifically adherent to the XD that I know of, it's just a yellow Disco.... :-)

Clean and low-miles, though.... I'd guess ~10k, but it depends on your local market... may go for less, but, it could go for more... how bad do you want it?

I may be completely wrong, but out of the 4 or 5 that I've seen in person, only one didn't have a saggy headliner. Other than that, it is just a Disco and it'll have problems:-) Wish my rig only had 27k on it.

I have a 97 XD that I purchased from the original owner here in San Diego. I apparently got ripped off since I compared it to the price of other 97 D1's and paid $16K for it with 63k/miles.

However, I do not have a sagging headliner, no valve problems (yet)! and have only had a few power steering hoses replaced. I just turned 100k and it runs great (knock on wood).

In addition, I have added all the basic mods and it has turned out to be quite a capable vehicle that I will likely keep and just put a new motor in to it.

I guess I got a good one...you can see the pics in my gallery.

Brendan,

I just bought a 96 XD. They're a lot of fun. I like the fact that they are fairly basic, at least mine is. It has cloth manual seats, (no electrics to go bad) no sunroofs (that leak like crazy later on) no wood trim or anything like that. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase. I've wanted an XD for a long time. I ended up getting a good deal on one out of Atlanta. I have had a 99 D2 that I bought new, my wife drives it now. I like the D2 a lot, but it just hasn't held up very well to the abuse I've thrown at it over the years. (Thank God for warranties)

Anyways, if you like the look of XD's and have located one with low miles, I say "Go for it!" I think you'll be happy with it.

By the way, my headliner is sagging slightly in a couple of places too. What's up with that? Is that an XD thing, or does it happen to other D1's too?

I've seen other Disco headliners sag.... neither of mine have, but neither of mine had sunroofs...

But... I've seen another w/o sunroofs also sag, so, I dunno if that's a notable correlation or not....

Oh, headliners sag in all discos. I think sunroofs actually help the matter, because they pin them down in a few more places. My headliner in my '96 is sagging horribly.

my 96 headliner is fine (just dusty) - I wonder if the sag is a humidity thing...

Blue,
You're probably right. I bet it has to do with the humidity. In the summer, the southeast gets hot and humid. It's enough to make alot of things sag.

Hmmm..............

That actually makes sense; my '99 was out of OK, and the '95 was out of VT (colder, versus hot southern humidity).....

As far as KBB, they are good on high volume vehicles, but specialty vehicles such as the XD are a different matter. Just check what they say a Defender is worth and then try to buy one for that price.

Yeah that is very true- KBB has no sense of "historic value" or how rare one is to find. BTW-my headliner doesn't sag at all for some reason-knock on wood

well, a vehicle is actually only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. KBB may not be accurate at all, but it is a good starting point for negotiation between the buyer & seller...kind of like the bible in that respect.

yeah,, and try getting a used car loan for a car that is priced above blue book or NADA value.

usually they will only loan 85% of book value to protect themselves from dead beat owners.

Rob,
If you have a good relationship with your banker and are looking at something other than a ford taurus or something else that they built 10 million of, most will consider the uniqueness of the vehicle in deciding loan amounts. That's just based on personal experience for what it is worth.

Howboucha Guys (and Gals!)
Sorry about my late reply to my own thread. I have been spending hours analyzing the love fest for in the "2005 Disco" thread. Man I miss that stuff. When I was in the Pinzgauer Community, that flaming crap went on all the time. I even found myself involved in a "I am going to kick your ass" online discussion. Only problem was he was in Colorado and I was in Indiana. Oh well, I am sure we will bump into each other at a 7-11 in Kansas City. :-)

Anyway, Chris: I know this is probably driving you nuts since it may even be near you, so here is the story. My wife and I finished an Easter brunch in downtown Indy (private club with the name of a Southern Country that is known for drugs) ((By the way, I am not a member #1, too rich for my blood #2 I am a democrat)
So as we were driving near the State House, there it was. I did everything I could to catch up to him just to check it out. Jennifer was excited too because she hasn't seen on in person, but hears me talk about it. He stopped at the Eitlejorg Museum and I pulled up beside him. I was surprised he rolled down the window because I was licking the glass like freak saying "I want it, I want it.."

Anyway, we talked for a while and he informed me that it could be for sale. I must say it was (is)in like new condition. I want to make an offer on it now, but we just bought a new home, and still have our (city) home on the market. I also have a sweet 76 MG Midget http:\www.howboucha.com/mg.htm that I need to sell before I can buy it. So there you go. Of course I am not going to let out who it is because I want it! But I did inform him of the greatest Disco resource on the web so there is a chance that he is even reading this.

Everyone else: Thanks for the advice on values. He was looking for a fair market value to give him an idea on what is fair to sell it for. My gut feeling is that he doesn't need the money, but of course wants what is fair for his extremely well kept XD.

Some quick thoughts about KBB. I sold motorcycles for a Honda, Kawasaki, Suzuki, Yamaha, Triumph, Sea Doo shop for seven years while going to ISU. There was a Honda car dealer there too. I learned the tricks of the trade. Basically, in a nutshell, Kelly Blue Book doesn't mean Crap! NADA is more respectable but dealers actually use the "Black Book". A good salesperson will use the Blue Book to his/her advantage. Did you know that there is a "Blue Book" that is designed to fool potential buyers and has low and high values that can be used against the buyer?

Good point on the financing. Of course, everyone is different. I have no problem financing anything (hope it stays that way). I financed my Pinzgauer when I bought it, and it was a 74'. And yes, it was with a real bank at a few points over prime. Like Paul said, a good relationship with a banker (hopefully a good one) is invaluable. Money is money, and banks will loan it to those with a good track record because they too, like money.

Thanks again everyone.

Use the KBB low-ball value to YOUR advantage. Print it out, show it to him, and then graciously offer 10% over since his is in such good condition.

Brendan I was wondering did it have a few safari gard stickers and some trek stickers on it? I keep seeing this kid who goes to another school a lot and he always stares at me and give me a dirty look. But that is the only XD I have seen in indy ever. My friend loves my car and he likes the XD so i am seeing if i can find one for him.

Chris,
This was an older gent who is a MD. His XD was bone stock and didn't have any non-OEM stickers on it.

What kind of punk would do that? Maybe a punk who's parents bought him an XD. He could be alright but may just natuarally looked pissed. Just a thought, when you see him is the sun in his face or yours. If it is in his, maybe he is squinting. (by the way, I am just b.s.'ing)

I once got into it with a cop (I know, stupid move) because I thought he was giving me a dirty look. When I stupidly said, "What the hell is wrong with you, do you just give people dirty looks all the time to screw with them because your a cop" (I know again, should have just kept my mouth shut but he chased me down while I was on my MC after a BMW car blew past him and me. I was just mad because I felt "picked on") Anyway, he humbly replied, "Yes, I do look this way normally and I am really not giving you or anyone dirty looks". I felt bad......:-( I never saw him on the force again. I hope I didn't set him in a state of depression and he quit his job.

Anyway, track him (mean looking XD kid) down and have Corey send the guy an e-mail so they can start an online fight here. The 2005 thread needs "refreshed".

I may have to nix the XD purchase for a while now. My wife discovered a 95 in West Terre Haute that was pretty cheap so we looked at it on Sunday. I was driving my pristine MG Midget that day and on the way home after looking at the disco and figuring out how I can afford it, I decided to see how fast my MG would go. Sure enough around 95 mph (still a few notches below red-line) the motor launched. Luckily we were a few miles from home so we towed it back with the Disco.

B.K.

Actually I think I might know, I saw an older guy in his 40s or 50s driving around and i saw an XD at the dealership while I picked up my car today. Yea he got the car from his parents, he went to my rival private school. So I think he is just jealous mine is so much cooler then his! My friend goes there and said he would never take it off-road. Makes me mad!!!
