We all know that DI 4.0's have valve ticks and knocks. But whats the real solution?

Had anyone used an additive and it stopped the knocking?

I put some in my oil yesterday and I'm hoping it cleans the lifters.
What does it really take to stop that rediculous knocking?

.. When you say 4.0 D1's, are you talking about 96's and later?

yeah. I believe that Discoveries had smaller engines before 1996 when they became 4.0's. Now however, the discovery 2's even bigger engines. I dont know about them.

Two bottles of Techron fuel system cleaner(or your favorite carbon build-up eliminator BG44k, Lucas, Gunk, etc), a full tank of gas, and drive it like you stole it.

I have a 99 D1, Started ticking at 35K and would knock for 1 to 2 seconds in the morning only when it's between 28&32F. Started using one quart Rislon with every oil change and haven't heard tick since. The morning dry start knock still happens every once in a while when it's between 28 & 32 F. It now has over 100K miles and runs like a top. Don't know if Rislon and Castrol 20W50 are the reason but, why change now.

As for sticking valves, my truck see's frequent upshifts into the 4200 RPM range and no sticking valves. Dealer told me the city trucks that idle alot in traffic have the most sticking valve issues.

BTW, Morning dry starts always happened when I used Moble 1 filter. No dry starts with Fram or Motorcraft filters. I guess the drain back valve must be better on these.

just my $.02

is it safe to say then that expensive valve work is not needed to stop the knocking? ie. I dont need to replace lifters and all that.

Knocking is usually caused by defective rocker shaft assemblies. There is no common problem with 4.0 lifters or cams in terms of making a regular knock

Does this require adjustment or replacement of parts?

it seems everyone has a different diagnosis and solution for this problem. The bottom line is, will land rover make good on their poor engineering even though I'm pushing a 96? It's clearly out of any warrenty.

You got a better chance of an anvil falling out of the sky and totalling your ride, than LR fixing something out of the goodness of thier heart.
