I just put a replacement bumper on my truck and now have a better approach angle. However I now see my steering rod looks pretty unprotected. How much impact can a steering rod take? Is normal mud offroading driving alright for the steering rod? Can it take a hit? How sturdy is it?

Also do you guys have any recommendations for a forward skid plate?

Carl,

You asked, "How much impact can a steering rod take? Is normal mud offroading driving alright for the steering rod? Can it take a hit? How sturdy is it?"

Our D2 steering components are very vulnerable. Sure you can go wheeling in the mud, but what happens that one day you drive over a rock that you didn't see and WHAMMO....you are out of business.

First off, which bumper did you go with. Sometimes there is a capatibility issue. Anthony listed Dap and I have seen that particular one. It does look stout enough to handle moderate abuse. AB carries one for the D2, also check out Southdown USA, they might have something for you.

Since you are thinking in the right direction about protection, have you installed a diff guard yet? I would be looking for those as well.

Carl I have an AB skid plate and it seems to work pretty well. Has taken hits with no problems. It seems to be a little thicker then a safari gard one and you wouldn't have to worry about it not fitting exactly compared to a safari gard. So I say go for an AB...also look at southdown like paul said, that look pretty good also...

Definitely get yourself some protection up there, whether it be a skid plate or a heavier duty steering rod. Rovertym sells heavy duty rods as does DAP. I've now got the Bearmach steering guard which is the same one from DAP. I strongly urge you to get a diff guard too. I got a set from www.roverbiz.com and have been more than happy with them.. Good luck

I have the Slimline Rovertrym Bumper. I want to see if I can get a skid plate from John, (has optional skid plate for bumper). Do you guys know if Rovertym has a skidplate I can install to fit my bumper?

I have the RTE skidplate with my front slimline but it does still leave the steering rod on the right side in a bit of a vulnerable position with a lift. First pic you can see the steering rod just below the skidplate. Second pic you can see the edge of the skidplate on the right (white triangle pointing at steering damper) then below it is the steering rod. On the top of the pic, you can see I also have ACE, not sure how that changes vulnerability issues.

After many tries, I finally figured out how to post a small pic.

Carl, I have the RTE skid and now that Jason mentions it, the whole rod is vulnerable. Hell, the only thing I can think of is to be careful. Damn, if it isn't one thing, it's another.

Garrett,

Your beach pass that you bought last year is still good until the end of May.

yes. "gun control means using both hands" or "big wheels, small minds"

they both work well.
