I have a 99 Disco II with 59k on it. When I start it up, I get the dreaded white puff of smoke. What causes this, and how do I fix it? TIA. |

Jim: You sure it isn't blue smoke? It's most likely due to oil seeping past the valve stem seals and entering the combustion chamber and burning when the engine starts. You don't see it in normal operation as the oil burns away before there is enough for you to see, but when it is sitting, it can pool in the cylinder. |

Thanks Paul. Should I be worried about this, or is it normal? |

Be worried if it's still with you all the time as you drive around. |

White smoke may be steam, which is normal in small amounts under certain weather conditions. Or it may be fuel from one or more leaky injectors. Although what Paul posted about valve stems leakage is true, that rarely happens to DII engines, and I doubt it is your problem now. John www.robisonservice.com |
