I have a 99 disco (not a series II). I just got back from a long drive cross country and when I got into stop and go traffic here the beast ideled extremely high (around 2500 RPM). Felt like I was stopping a semi. I saw people referring to this but could find any messages about high idle. I was going to look at the throttle cable, any other ideas?

Having the same problems with my 96. It was either stalling or idling high when coming to a stop. The base idle was reset which alleviated the stalling but from time to time it will idle high. I'm taking it back and I'll let you know what the deal is whenever I can make it back to the @!!**&%$@!! dealer.

This is a pretty lame answer, but I had the same problem after a long trip and when the thing tried to rev up (basically as soon as I shifted in to drive) I said, "alright engine, you seem to think you're a BMW S54 power plant and you need to get your revs up!" and I abliged it by tromping on the gas and revving it almost to redline. I did it twice and that was enough for it to remember it's just a lowly crawling buick. Problem went away never to return. Worth a try right?

I have a 96' with the same idle trouble and after diagnosis it turned out to be leaking injectors. My fuel rail and injectors were clogged with deposits causing some to stick open at idle speed. Not 100% sure on this, but nothing else was faulty.

Dave that is interesting because I recently ran some Techron through a tank and my idle was noticibly better. Interesting.

Make sure there is no crap keeping your throttle assembly from returning to its rest position. I had a chipmunk eat an accorn under my hood and a tiny little piece fell down into the back stop area of my throttle linkage assembly. It was almost impossible to see. I think I found it by accident when I used an air hose. It takes a tiny bit of debrit to make your engine rev way too high. My $.02
