Hello All,

I lost power steering in my 95 Disco. How can you tell if it is the steering box or the power steering pump that has failed? Thanks

Andrew:
There is a bleeder screw on top of the gear box. Open the valve and see if you get fluid to come out. This is something of a presumptive test, but at least it will begin to lead you in the right direction.

There is fluid running in and out of the resevoir. Before I lost the power steering I was constantly refilling the power steering reservoir with fluid. About a 1/4 to 1/2 a week. Thanks for the feedback.

Drew:
Where was it leaking?

I'm beginning to lean toward it being the pump as you may have inadvertently run it dry and the rear support bearing is tiny and fragile if run dry. Also, pumps are relatively inexpensive, available used (I have a boneyard pump on my Disco), and a quick job to rip out the old one and throw a new one in. On the other hand, I have so far destroyed a gearpuller trying to get the pitman arm off of a donor gearbox, and I haven't even begun to try to remove the leaking one from my truck. I have strong suspicions this may be a big job for me...

Peace,
Paul

Thanks Paul,

It seems to be leeking all over the steering box, and the hoses from the reservoir of course. Before I lost the power steering a squeeling sound was coming from the box when I turned the wheel. When I topped the fluid off the squeel went away. Then all of a sudden no power steering. Thanks again for the feedback. Good luck with your pump.

Drew
