Hey all,
finally replaced the catalyctic converters this morning (after putting it off for quite a few months...) and when the meineke guy went to reset the check engine light he showed me that there were a couple other codes showing up....I've researched the codes but I'm curious if some of these are simply residual codes from when the cats were bad. The codes were
-Randon/multiple cylinder misfire
-cylinder 4 misfire
-cylinder 3 misfire
-Misfire/excessive emmissions
-misfire catalyst damage fault bank A
-catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank a)

Sooo......the big question of mine is...
am I out of the woods yet? I plan on working on the spark plugs and trying to run some engine cleaner through it..
but am I in line for a valve job?
thanks for your help...and I'll be over in the corner sacrificing a chicken to the LR gods...

I'd reset those codes, and then wait to see if you get any new ones. That'll tell you if you are having new problems.

Thanks Jared...I guess I'm still concerned since I didn't have a tremendous increase in power on the drive from the shop to work this morning. but I guess I'll know more after this week. I've only been able to hit 50ish mPh ever since the cats failed.... I'm hoping to hit 65 tonight.....

The codes you have suggest your truck is suffering some valve sticking, perhaps only occasionally.

The only one of the codes that will be fixed with a new cat is the last one, cat efficiency.

I think you're right about the valve sticking...the troublesome thing is that I still have terrible performance (its tough to get up to 55 mph) and the check engine light came back on last night. I tried to get the codes read at autozone but I think I'm going to have to go to a different mechanic shop to get them checked out.
here's my dilemma...I'm supposed to be moving back across country (north carolina to colorado) in about 2.5 weeks. Is there anything I can do for the engine to get it cleaned out right now and then have the valves done with my mechanic back out west? I've heard of seefoam (?) or perhaps something else?
Honestly, I'm concerned about the fact that I need to find the parts and a mechanic to get a valve job done here in Charlotte. recommendations?
thanks

I don't think there is anythig you can pour into the motor to fix this . . . the problem is with the exhaust valves so anything you pour in has been burned in the cylinders before it reaches the valves.

As to driving it that way - if you drive all that way, the new cat will probably be damaged or ruined.

If you want to bring it here we can do the job overnight. Cost is a bit under or over $2,000 depending upon what other stuff gets done too (injectors, water pump, etc). The vehicle can be trucked here for about $600.

I appreciate the idea...and I think I might have to take you up on it...I'll have to procure the funds (unless you guys have a payment plan!) first..and then set it up...to be honest with you I'd be happy to sacrifice the cats to get out to CO in time for my job to start and then I can replace everything out there...(or let it sit until I can save enough money for a new engine and NRP exhaust kit) The problem is towing a UHaul across country (even if I replace the plugs..vss...throw some cleaner through there and take my time)...I just don't think I'll make it!
IF you have some contact info for your shop feel free to email me at jday@equifirst.com and I can try to get the funds together to get it taken care of.
Thanks

54
63
72
81

So Last night I went out to the parking lot with my head lamp on in the hopes that I would be able to check my spark plugs in the cylinders that were misfiring. I checked two of them and while they were pretty dirty they didn't look that bad. I was thinking about it and I'm at the point where I'm willing to try anything before I suck it up...give blood and pay for the valve job.
If I replaced the spark plugs (I have magnecore wires on there less than 2 years old) and run some seefoam... other engine cleaner...and just understand that I'm going to have to replace my cats again when I get out to Colorado...do you guys think I can make it?
I guess I'm grasping at straws but I'm still curious.
Thanks again
